This has happened to me after having my ear looked at querying wax. Told ear was clear and immediately after leaving audiologist my hearing had gone completely. I have since seen GP who said their WAS wax and prescribed drops of sodium bicarbonate for a week, after which an attempt was made to wash out the wax. It was found that very little wax was there but ear was now infected. I’m now on course of 7 days antibiotics and still no hearing in left ear. I have mentioned having ET and queried if this could cause it, but as we know GP’s have very little knowledge of the many symptoms this can cause. I’m worried it might have been vascular occlusion . Has anyone else had any hearing trouble please. Fran

Has anyone with ET suffered sudden complete hearing loss in one ear?
Hi Azaelea,
I also have ET and suffered sudden hearing loss in one ear and was concerned that I was having a stroke. I ended up being seen in the Urgent Care clinic and was diagnosed with an ear infection and was put on a 7 day course of antibiotics. I still have problems with that ear several months later. No one seems to know why. It's puzzling.
Thanks for your reply ZeldaB. I’m not the only one then! Hoping my antibiotics improve things as yours did…..to a certain extent. On my 4 th day now but still the same.
It could be a coincidence. That’s the problem with our illness -symptoms of MPN or unrelated. Hope it gets sorted
Yes. I cannot hear well out my left ear anymore.
No. Wasn't sudden and wasn't complete.
Hi Azaelea. I have ET, too, and although I don’t have true hearing loss, I have had constant ringing in my ears for more than 18 months. My Hematologist said he believes it’s from ET. There might be a connection.
I think there must be a connection! I’ve been at GP’s four weeks in a row now. They keep changing their minds about wax or no wax. Latest is there is still some infection even after course of antibiotics. Back again next Thursday and leave ear to settle this week! It must be really disturbing having ringing in your ear! We ET ers just don’t know what can be affected in our bodies unfortunately. Thanks for your reply. Fran
I had moderate (according to the audiologist) sudden onset hearing loss, both ears. The ENT man says it could be associated with ET/Hydroxy. I haven't yet chatted to my haematologist. They now tell me that I should have immediately rung 111 and gone to A&E for Steroids. At least within 2 weeks. I went to the GP and all he asked for was a hearing test (almost as though he didn't believe me) by the time I got a test (long story) it was too late. They now tell me that it is permanent and I am wearing hearing aids which aren't doing much. Currently people's speech sounds like they've just inhaled helium and everything sounds like I'm in a bucket with cotton wool in my ears. I've only had the aids for 10 days so hoping my brain adjusts enough for me to at least hear people when they talk to me directly. I can't hear the TV nor music.
