Doxycycline with Hydroxycarbamide safe?
hi LoveTheLlama, you can ask the pharmacist for advice on this, they will check any contra-indications for you and advise you accordingly. Best wishes, Maz
I was put on Doxycycline recently in Hospital when a course of steroids and Amoxicillan didn't help much. At the time though I must stress that the consultant stopped my Hydrea because of other blood abnormalities. I would check with the prescribing doctor. Tina.🤗
Hi yes I have taken doxycycline and I am on Hydroxycarbamide, the only other one I can take is metronidazole. Doxycycline is quite a mild antibiotic where as Metronidazole is very strong.
Hi jean. Doxycycline is used to treat serious bacterial infections and are typically used when other antibiotics have failed to work. They are actually one of the stronger antibiotics but can have some unpleasant side effects and unlike other antibiotics were you probably take 3 times throught out the day, with Doxycycline with a serious infection you would typically be given 200mg at first than a maintenance dose of 100mg to follow.
Thanks both. I have checked with my Haemo team and they've confirmed it's ok to take this alongside Hydroxy
Checked ePocrates for interactions between doxycycline and hydroxyurea. "No significant interaction(s) known or found for selected drugs. Caution always advised with multiple medications."
As always, check with your pharmacist for more detailed information. DO pay attention to your gut microbiome. All antibiotics can disrupt the flora in your gut. HU also has antibiotic qualities. You may want to talk to the pharmacist about a course of probiotics to support your microbiome.
