Shielding and Furlough.

Hi all, I've just seen a post from Maz about a letter for Gp's regarding people with MPN's being clinically vulnerable and how to add them to the shielding list.

This raises questions for me...

I have been furloughed throughout Covid19 and as a result have only received 80% of my wage for a full year. Had I been on the shielding list that would've been 100%. Not happy about that at all.

I have been to supermarkets regularly, I've been back at work as and when needed 2-3 days a week since July. I even had Christmas dinner with family, all this time I have been extremely vulnerable to Covid19 and because I never received a letter to shield I wasn't aware how serious it was.

When will Gp's realise that the W.H.O. have classified MPN's as cancer for more than 12 years? And that the risk of death from Covid19 has been as high for MPN patients as people with any other cancer?

I assume that it will all be brushed under the carpet, but how do I go about claiming my 20% of my wage back? I'm sure thousands of people will soon be asking the same question.

I'm sick to death of feeling like mpn isn't a 'real cancer' and we're all malingerers.

Shielding actually ends officially tomorrow. I’m sorry I have no idea how you would go about claiming the rest of your salary if it is possible

Hi Rob, speak to your employer and your HR department about this, they should advise you on what you can do about this. I assume from what you have said about going to supermarkets and work that you were not told to shield by your consultant haematologist, this is something you will need to discuss with her/him. Best wishes, Maz

Hi Rob,

I think the letter Maz posted was for England only, not Scotland. I’m not up to date with Scotland but was anyone advised to shield?

Although we were advised to shield in England it was advice not law.

I’m guessing your employers would be the only route for you.

Good luck.

I wish all consultants would give the same advice about shielding, the virus doesn't know if you live in Scotland or England 😮
