Venesections and PPE

I went for my second venesection last Tuesday. Had the first of 2, three weeks ago and there were only 2 of us on the ward the first-time, so not much going on. Anyway, last Tuesday I turned up for appointment at 2pm and had my temperature taken before I was let on the ward. There were 3 people in having a clear liquid via drips and one having what looked like a blood transfusion. The 3 on drips had to have their observations every 15 minutes. The care the nurses took to keep everyone safe was fantastic. When they left one patient they took off their plastic aprons and gloves. Washed their hands and then put on another apron and new gloves before going to the next patient. One nurse cleaned the monitoring equipment every time it was used. Even cleaned the strap they put on your arm to raise the vein. Masks worn all the time. As they were so busy (they have another ward as well ) I had to wait an hour on the bed before venesection, so I observed this for over an hour and not once did they let slip. The extra time it was taking was quite a bit. They were also a nurse down due to holidays and day off. They were cheerful, professional and never complained once. I'm very impressed in how they are handling it. I've been going to the unit for 12 years and know how good they are, but this was outstanding. A lot different to a previous post that someone wrote a few weeks ago. Take care all.

Hey Mark, what a great experience there, I guess my Day Unit at Manchester will be just the same though fortunately I haven't needed to attend for some time though that clear liquid could be immunoglobulin which I sometimes need topping up and is a slow process. I've spent many hours (probably days/ weeks) hooked up and the nurses are marvellous and faultless in their hygiene.

It's gratifying to know you can attend feeling comfortable and cared for in the safest way possible even if it takes that bit longer. I certainly wouldn't have any qualms attending the Day Unit it's getting to and from it and the general clinic where my main concern would be but I'm sure they will be doing everything possible to safeguard, as many attendees will have compromised immune system.

Cheers for sharing a positive experience.

Regards - Chris

Hi Chris

I was concerned about going into the main hospital as the MDU used to be next to the intensive care unit. The MDU has moved to the rehabilitation centre, so I don't have to go into the main hospital. Last 3 monthly clinic was via telephone, which was ok. Next one is in August and letter says to attend, but get bloods done a week before in the community. I assume everything will be safe as clinic is in the cancer unit and have to mingle with people waiting for chemo etc.

We're quick to complain but slow to praise. We see the frontline medics in the media and can't imagine what they are going through both physically and mentally. We tend to forget about the other part of the NHS that is still functioning. I've been thinking about it and have decided to email the health board to say how impressed I was with MDU. I believe they do have awards for individuals and teams. Take care and look after yourself. All the best Marc.
