Hi All, I was diagnosed with PV approx 15 months ago Jak 2 Pos I have only been on aspirin and venesections every 2-3 months. over the last week i have noticed some bleeding when i brush my teeth, I never get any bleeding when i brush my teeth normally so thought perhaps I've got a sore tooth or something, then on Friday evening when i was brushing my teeth before i went to bed there was quite a lot of blood which really shocked me, i read that bleeding gums/mouth is a side affect, does anyone else have this problem? not sure whether to contact my consultant? someone did tell me it could be the aspirin. Does this mean my Platelets are too high? my last test they were 915. last 2 days i have not had any blood but worried the PV is now progressing and i will have to start taking the drug.
Bleeding Gums: Hi All, I was diagnosed with PV... - MPN Voice
Bleeding Gums
Hi Lumiart, get in touch with your specialist nurse at the hospital for some advice about this. Maz
Hey Lumiart...
Is the Aspirin that you are taking 'Enteric-coated'?
If not, it has been known to cause bleeding gum problems...
The Enteric-coating can protect against some of the unwanted bleeding side-effects...
However, I agree w/ Maz, you should speak w/ your Specialist consultant first before doing anything of course...
Best wishes
Steve
Increase your vitamin C, preferably liposomal. Use 15ml three times a day.
It could be either the aspirin or the PV that cause gums to bleed. Given that aspirin always made me bleed excessively, including gums, I would be suspicious of the aspirin. When I d/c the aspirin - all excessive bleeding stopped. With my MPN profile, I am more at risk for hemorrhage at this point than thrombosis, which is why the MPN Specialist took me off of it. However, I was on aspirin for 30+ years with only minor bleeding issues. Most docs do recommend something clotting-protective for most patients.
Do be sure to talk to your treatment team. If you have not had a von Willebrand Panel, then that would be in order at this point. (measures clotting factors, and prothrombin times). I suspect that you may just be encountering normal issues those of us with PV experience, but you do want to put your mind at ease about what is going on. You may or may not need a change to your tx plan.
All the best to you.
