EXERCISE INJURY & RECOVERY – (TIME IS THE THING...)

Evening all... :D

Felt that the topic of this Post is most relevant, well at least it should be for me... I am not always so good at following my own advice.

As some of you may know / recall, cycling has become a major part of my personal MPN journey, and for the better part most of the incidental happenings, to this point, have been beneficial... However... I sometimes tend to neglect my own inner personal alerts, (suggesting to me to listen to what my body is saying...), and as a direct consequence of my failure to listen, injury often materialises in one form or another...

Funny thing our so-called 'Human Nature', because I often try to exert myself and go beyond my abilities, (tending to ignore simple facts like: my senior age, affects of anaemia, & of course all those other adverse affects associated more likely w/ my MF...)

Case in point, for some time now I had been wanting to ride a rather arduous and long ride that is full of glorious hills, and Sunday last... on my new (relatively untried bike), I simply decided that today was the day, and off I went... I did try to find a couple of willing riding accomplices... but 150km rides are not all that appealing to most... In any event, I taught myself a few rather unnecessary but useful lessons...

My new bike's carbon seat–post, had not been properly set-up or tightened, (for that matter), and approx.' half way into the ride it slowly started to slip down... Me, and my rather muted response was quite annoying, (due to my distractions), because firstly the hill-climbing was so captivating my attention, (not to mention the traffic – unusually busy day for some reason?). Secondly, as I am new to the 'bike-fit' (New rides do take some adapting to, as my old bike is quite different in a great many respects)...

However, the real issue here was that I simply wasn't aware of the seat-post slippage for quite sometime...

By the time, it became abundantly apparent... the damage sustained by my older leg muscles had already occurred, and now it was all about trying to nurse myself through the last 50-60km leg of the journey...

Due to the extreme cold, (wind-chill and circa 11ºC - Spring morning for many of you guys, but the cold is actually quite painful for me). I began cramping faster and more easily than I ever recalled previously... I endeavoured to ride through the cramps as best I might by standing in the pedals, but eventually... I just had to keep stopping and stretch and try to walk it out... Naturally, this slowed my pace making the whole trip so much longer in duration, (walking any distance in 'clipless boots' never any fun either), and the temperature grew ever colder ... The thought did cross my mind that I could ask someone to come and collect me... (more than twice...). However, I actually felt quite foolish, and even more so once I realised that this leg pain had largely been caused by the seat-post slipping, and of course the correct tools were not onboard... (?)

I guess some of my age-weary stubbornness has reared its ugly head... Vanity, what a nasty bedfellow it can be...

First lesson – listen to my body!

Second – Always be sure to carry all the tools needed especially on any possible longer misadventure ;-)

Third – Recovery takes time...

My Garmin GPS advised me that my body would need 72 hours to recover, that was followed up with gentle aerobic exercises & some light weights, before I took a much shorter easier paced 'Recovery Ride' c. 40+km

Anyways, enough about me...

Here's the Post... 8-)

Stay safe & well guys...

Steve

Hi, Steve. Good for you for pushing yourself to keep exercising. I wish I had your stamina, although it sounds like you had a difficult time on this ride. I was walking about 2 miles a day when this quarantine started but my knees really became painful, as well as my arms and lower back. I cut back to a mile which seemed to alleviate some of the the pain but then I developed a UTI E. coli infection and I was on antibiotics for 3 weeks. I’ve stopped walking for exercising, altogether now due to other symptoms I’ve been having which I’m sure are due to my MF, like worsening fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and decreased appetite. Tomorrow I’m going back to my hematologist to see if my numbers have changed again.

Again, thanks for sharing your story. I’m going to try to get out there more and push myself to do more.

Take care and stay well.

Cindy

Hey Cindy... :-)

Sorry to learn of your evolving issues... Hopefully, it's nothing too serious... you might have a small bug in your system that will clear up of its own volition very soon... (?)

Whatever, exercise you do decide to take on, just try to remain consistent, and don't be like me and push beyond one's limitations... just cruise along and gradually improve... 8-)

Stay safe & well... Lovely to hear from you too... :-)

Best wishes

Steve

Hi Steve, yes it will be available on our Facebook page and will go on our website as well so you can watch at your leisure. Well I should have kept my mouth shut over the lovely weather, today it's very dull and windy and looks like rain, oh well! Strange times we are all in the grip of. Best wishes, Maz x

I will try very hard to keep this in mind, for after I have had my hip replacement (covid delayed until further notice :( ) as I too have a tendency to go a bit too far or do too much usually...

Keep going, whilst I will not be aiming for the length of cycle rides you do, it's good to have inspiration :-D x

Cheers Minu... 8-)

I hope that you'll be able to have your Op' soon... and that you'll be looking for slower ways to start back into being physical... One step at a time... ;-)

Best wishes Minu...

Hahahahha. Your mind is still 25 years old! Common in men. Be less ambitious. Baby steps and build. But dont give up. I have been trough similar...and never thought that yoga and pilates would be my thing.... but it is helping to stay fit. Forget the weights that I used to lift!

Hey there... :-)

Yes, well I guess we all suffer a little from Narcissistic tendencies, (I know that I do...), from time to time... I / we are only human after all... ;-)

Cycling works for me, but I do need to listen more closely, and especially when i'm in the cooler seasons, (autumn & winter), because I suffer adversely from being cold...

However, the benefits of cycling and my diet have proved useful, in my case... 8-)

Stay safe & well...

Best wishes

Well

Steve you certainly know how to challenge yourself !!! That was some ride. I hope you are feeling much easier now. I can’t even begin to imagine how you lasted that long . Having kept up with your MPN journey, you have certainly come a very long way since diagnosis.

The work and mental effort you must have put in to get to this stage deserves admiration and in my case awe....

You must have an extremely strong will .

Congratulations on doing what you are doing.

Best wishes Sandy 👍🏻

Hope you are keeping safe & well...

Best wishes Sandy

Hiya. So whilst I am not up there with you in terms of distance, I recognise the pushing yourself, and sometimes too far.

I was finding lock down frustrating as I had been getting my 10k steps in a day and was building back up to gym or swim once a week, I had been patchy on that for about 6 months.. Anyway I then got extremely excited and tried to do everything at once, started couch to 5k, reconnected with my yoga teacher online and then thought I'd do a skype personal training session using heavy duty resistance bands.. Needless to say I then felt really poor, and it out me off for a few weeks... So I am still trying to learn these lessons..

I am back on with yoga a couple of times a week and I'm up to week 6 on the running, but that has taken about 9 weeks to get here.. But I am enjoying it. Never liked running before really..

Still haven't plucked up the strength to do the resistance bands again though!!! LOL..

Take care

Katherine

Hey Katherine... :-)

Hope you are travelling along well w/ your MF too...

Yes, it's easy w/ a sudden burst of energy to want to do more... The guys I am usually riding along side of are more often than not, my junior in years, (& they're healthy of course). ;-)

One of my English buddies who is 5 years younger, could never keep up w/ me in he beginning... However, now days, he rides more consistently, and the reverse has become true... & I struggle to keep up w/ him...

Consistency, therefore is the thing, whatever we decide to take on... That and being mindful of our own limitations, (as they are), there should be no shame in staying as fit and healthy as I am able too... That's just vanity interfering w/ my real objective... which is to improve & maintain my Quality of Life, and to enjoy the process as much as I can... Being cognisant of 'Time' & learning to live w/ it can also be something rewarding and special in many ways...

Stay safe & well Katherine... 8-)
