Managing through this situation is a bit like a game of chess. You need to think several moves ahead.

If you have a transfusion on Wednesday - and it sounds like it is needed - it will push back your next transfusion to later in the year and this might be after the outbreak has peaked.

If you dont have the transfusion on Wednesday your health will decline and that might mean a hospital visit/ admission.

On balance I think I would have the transfusion but think about how you can do this (travel arrangements, food and drink) in a way that will minimise your risk.

Hi Westlieght (my fellow North Devonian), tricky dilemma for you, it might be worth waiting until after the weekend and then contacting the hospital for an update on attending appointments like yours. Hope your daughter and her son are ok. Maz x

Morning my lovely, your daughter will understand. She would rather you kept safe than risk passing anything at all on to you.

I understand your concerns regarding your hospital appointment. It looks like you don’t have any choice if you need a transfusion. If you have to sit in a busy waiting room I would explain to the receptionist that you are a high risk. Tell them you would rather wait in the corridor and ask if she would be willing to come outside and call you in when your name is called. I am sure she would accommodate you.

I am waiting any day for my mums nursing home to close its doors. My mum is 96 and I adore her. I dread the day I am told I can’t go and see her incase I don’t see her again.

I just want everyone to keep safe.

Mum will understand and Ithink all visitors should stay away from nursing homes and hospitals. Try to keep the frail elderly safe.

I have just had a call from mum's home saying they had to phone 111 for her today as she is complaining of sore throat and cough. 111 said because it's not a continuous cough they don't think it's coronavirus. I went to visit her yesterday to tell her that soon I may not be able to visit to keep both her and I safe. I hope to God she is okay.

13 nursing homes on Teesside have locked their doors to all but essential visits.

My local hospital, sandwell and west birmingham health trust are banning all visitors from tomorrow only essential visits. Only 1 person and are restricted to bed. Someone ripped the hand sanitizer of the wall when entering 1 ward, staff appalled. Dispicable behaviour! I believe in karma, what goes around comes around. Atb, tina.🤗 P.S. Hope your mum recovers.

Oh good God. That is the worst thing I have heard. To risk the health of those most vulnerable like that. I hope karma pays them back 10 fold.

I am in the same position in North Devon. Speaking to my haematologist yesterday he felt reassured that there is plenty of space between the chairs at Barnstaple - not the case in Exeter and they are trying to do something about that. At the moment I have transfusions at one of the small hospitals in North Devon so I don’t feel quite as anxious although I’m not sure if this is just wishful thinking. I think on balance that I will feel the need for transfusion will eventually out weigh the risk. I hope you stay safe and well

Do you see Dr Veale?

I have seen him and really liked him but my usual consultant is Dr Copell who is also lovely. All the staff at Barnstaple seem to be really lovely people. We are very lucky. Best wishes, Jan

Hi from an ex Bideford Grammar school boy (oops - giving my age away).

I am in a similar position but booked in for venesection on Monday. I phoned the haematology ward who said to turn up unless anything changes either from government advice, or if I start showing symptoms that mean I should self isolate.

Oops! I vaguely remember that we’ve been asked not to name Drs here. If we have transgressed please accept apologies and Maz, please remove our posts if they are not appropriate
