Are we more at risk of a serious reaction to the corona virus?
Corona virus: Are we more at risk of a serious... - MPN Voice
Corona virus
I am taking it very seriously as they say if you are young and fit you should be okay but I am on Hydroxycarbamide, which we all know is an immunosuppressant and I am two years away from 60, plus I have asthma. I won’t go into crowded venues and I am fastidious on using hand gel. I don’t think you can be to careful at the moment so why take the risk.
I'm also taking it really seriously for the same reasons as jillydabrat. I know only too well how bad these mutated viruses can be as I had swine flu (H1N1) in 2009. It was the only time in my life that I've had flu.
I was 'fit and healthy' back then but it was still horrendous... and I swear it was the cause of my PV.
I'm taking no chances this time around!
Hi Kari,
That is really something. My ET was visible 2010, a year after I had the swine flu! Mind you, I was also dealing with my mom’s last year, illness and death. The swine flu almost killed me, but I had a long history of bronchitis and 3 pneumonias. Since I was diagnosed and went in the autoimmune paleo diet and detoxed my body, fixed deficiencies, etc. I’ve hardly been sick. I’ve had 2 colds in 2.5 years and I warded both off in 36 hours with 7-8x1.5g of vit C daily. My immune system is much stronger at 55 than at 35 because of all this. I take Anagrelid.

Hi there. I posted this response to the thread started by Pippa ..,
I asked this very question last week up at Guy’s Hospital - well it was more general. “If we have ET / PV and are on Hydroxy are we more susceptible to infection?” And the answer was ... not really. Maybe a bit.
If you have asthma / other chest conditions / a history of chest infections or are elderly you are more at risk should you contract COVID-19. Ditto conditions which make you seriously immunocompromised (not ET / PV).
Hand washing, hand washing, hand washing is the advice. Do not pick your nose, touch your lips or rub your eyes - unless you have clean hands!! Masks are of no use whatsoever - unless you are sick and want to protect others from your germs. So avoid people wearing masks!!!
My generally gung-ho other half has asthma and lungs compromised by sarcoidosis scarring. My elderly mother-in-law has COPD. Much more concerned about them. We’re becoming more circumspect about using public transport in rush hour etc. But we need to keep on living. Bring on the hand gel!!
reply to you all, I have just posted advice from the medical team regarding this
As a liver transplant recipient on hi tech immunosuppressant medication for 14 years, I've been advised that I'm to be as careful as every other person. Handwashing (happy birthday x2), avoidance of large crowds as much as possible and just adherence to general hygiene measures. No masks etc. I'm in Ireland where there only two cases so far but who knows how that will increase with such movements in and out of the country...?
