Make People Notice in September, blood cancer awareness month

MPNs are very rare, which means that not many people know about them, what they are, how they make us feel. How many times have you told people that you have a myeloproliferative neoplasm to be met with a blank stare! So why not Make People Notice during blood cancer awareness month and wear something red, and try and make it stand out, and be unusual, the possibilities are endless, but here are some ideas:

a red feather in your hat

a red rosette or a flower on your jacket/coat

red pom pom earrings

a red mug for your coffee at work

red polka dots on your face (if you are brave enough!)

make some red cakes to take into work or hold a coffee morning

have a ‘wear it red party’ like Catherine did a few years ago, with everyone wearing red and having red food

And then when someone asks you why you are wearing something red, or eating something red, you can tell them why, that you are doing it to Make People Notice that MPNs exist, and that although they are rare they affect many people around the world, of all ages.

You could even ask people to sponsor you to wear something unusual to work, something whacky and fun, or just make a donation to support MPN Voice.

Whatever you do, enjoy it, have fun, and please, send us some photos.

Great idea Maz! Little heed has been paid to blood cancer month in the media in Ireland this month. So next year I will plan something. But your idea gives ne something to do now. Thank you! All the best.

I have the greatest difficulty telling people I have a Myeloproliferative Neoplasm, because I still can't say the name without seeing it written down! I think it would be fun to organise an office challenge to have people say the words, and give prizes for the most original attempt! I will be attending the local Leukaemia and blood cancer meeting this week for the first time, and I am already in a bit of a lather practicing saying the "myelo what notty plasm" name in case we all sit round in a circle and have to do the, "Hello I'm Peter a painter and potter and I have a Myleoooo..... what..not!" :-) Pxx

I don't think you are alone when it comes pronouncing all those big words we have had to learn since diagnosis. 😁🤔

Probably learning such challenging things will be found to be good for our minds, a bit like doing cross word puzzles or Sudoku! Who knows, IQ might leap by 20 percent if we say Myeloproliferative Neoplasm enough times! :-)

What fun! I'm wondering if I have to sing it in reverse, or standing on my head, seeing as I am in New Zealand, on the opposite side of the globe! You have to be quite an acrobat living here, with everything being upside down! :-)

Wonderful! If you say it slowly with a certain operatic resonance it sounds just like someone casting a spell in a Harry Potter movie! I'm waiting for the cat to disappear in a puff of smoke, or the lights to go out! Looks like a full moon outside this evening, so the atmosphere is just right!

Tried it - did get some reaction - but almost everyone says something along the lines of 'oh, it's a sort of Leukemia then'.

Explaining the difference is a little complicated !

Nice idea all the same.
