I started taking amitriptyline for tension headaches about 10 months ago, found 20mg dose was enough to stop them completely., made me a little drowsy in the morning to begin with but soon got over that. After years of living with a constant headache it was miraculous. However, in the last 2 weeks they have returned so currently increasing the dose in increments to see if that helps. Joined this forum for answers and I am sad to see that headaches returning while on amitriptyline is not uncommon. My advice would be take the amitriptyline and enjoy the relief they bring while you can.

Hi there, thanks so much for your reply, I have had chronic tension headaches since May this year and can't shift them. seen my gp yesterday and I suggested Amitriptyline will see how I am in a few weeks then he would prescribe them. Thanks again for your help. Very much appreciated.

hello there, I started taking amitriptyline about 8 years ago as a migraine preventative.I started on 10mg per night and that worked for a few years.I had to increase to 20mg per night and again that worked for quite a while. My migraines were less frequent and much less severe if I got one.The amitryptyline stopped working for me a couple of years ago.I have graves disease which causes an overactive thyroid. This lead to increased anxiety and fast heartrate.I started getting a migraine every week.My GP didn't want to increase my amitriptyline so he prescribed a beta blocker(proprananol).I take 20mg 3x a day. This has done the trick.I take it alongside the amitriptyline. These have been life changing for me.I would say give it a go.Best wishes and I hope it works for you.

Hi, I've been taking 10mg amitriptyline for migraines for the last two months (had been getting them 2 out of every three days, at times unbearable). So far so good - I haven't had the slightest headache for 17 days now - it feels almost too good to be true. I wish I had tried this drug in earnest before. The only thing that worries me is that it seems they do creep back, but as moosmum13 suggests, I'll enjoy the relief while I can :)
