Has anyone suffering with chronic migraine tried HRT? I was thinking about asking for HRT gel or cream rather than oral medication.

Migraine and HRT
Yes been on HRT for 12 months. I am on continuous combined, the oestrogen component is Sandrena gel 1mg per day and progesterone Utrogestan 100mg. I started with the Utrogestan orally but I was getting headaches so now I take 100mg every other day vaginally. I am going for a scan to check my uterus soon. After a month the hot flushes disappeared, and then my joints and sleep improved it was at the 6 month mark I saw an improvement in migraine. I stopped vomiting and they are less intense and respond to triptans again. I am no longer on any preventatives. Hope this helps,
Good luck!
Thank you so much for your reply, very helpful. 😊
Hi there,
The best way of receiving HRT if you suffer from chronic migraine would be through a patch. A patch ensures even hormone delivery. Gels (and tablets) are much more variable in delivery which isn’t a problem for those who don’t suffer from migraine but those who do tend to react to fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone. Whether or not you have continuous/combined deliver or sequential will be down to your age and where you are in terms of your menopause.
All good wishes.
Yes I’ve just started estrogen patches and ugtrogestan tablets cyclically. As I have migraine they won’t give me oral estrogen and I’m ok with that. Get the Balance app there is loads of advice on there.
Yes. HRT works for me. Patch is best as delivers constant estrogen levels.
