Chronic cluster headaches

Hi, my name is majacmun and I suffer from chronic cluster headache. I have been given prednisolone 60mgd to take for six weeks then taper off .

My question is, is this not an excessive length of time to take this size of dosage, and will they help prevent the headaches? Aplologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I am new here and this is my first post....

Hello. My husband also suffers from chronic cluster headaches. He deals with them by taking verapamil every day and zomig when needed. He's always refused the steroids for some reason.

Our daughter had leukaemia when she was 3 and was taking 40mg of pred so 60mg sounds reasonable for an adult but I'm no doctor.

Hope your suffering calms down soon. It's such a nasty illness and when people comment about it just being a headache I really want to hit them! I see how imdebilitating it is for my husband. Xx

60mg for 6 weeks does sound too long - is this for cluster headaches only? If a doctor has prescribed I believe he must have good reasons, but you don't have to continue if you see no benefits after 2 weeks and see another doctor to re assess. However I do think stopping / changing dose must be done under medical supervision.

I would highly recommend joining OUCH!UK (Organisation for the Understanding of Cluster Headache). I have been a chronic sufferer for eight years and the advice and assistance from OUCH has been invaluable. Pain free wishes x

I've no idea if this would be useful information to you. I have chronic migraines (50% of the time roughly) and I'm an insomniac. I was talking to my specialist the other day and I said that I'm only getting about 5 hours sleep at night for about last 2 months and i commented that i thought ironically sleep deprivation made my migraines better. We'll it turns out this is not an unknown phenomenon, she said that there is a study going right now that is specifically looking at imposed sleep deprivation and it's effect on cutting the incidence of cluster headaches. It wouldn't be fun to do obviously but it wouldn't be as bad for you as some medication?I don't know anything about cluster headaches specifically but maybe you could ask your doctor about it?
