Would this be migraine symptoms or something else?

I have had episodes of tingling numbness in my lips and hands. Along with a Severe headache with pain on one side of the skull and behind the eye. Also with nausea, black spots, dizziness & feeling dazed/semi conscious slurring of words. Is this just typical of a migraine?

I know some people can have some of these symptoms with migraine, but just to rule it out, you also need to look into Hughes Syndrome/Antiphopholipid Syndrome, often other family members may have an autoimmune disease etc. It can cause the symptoms you describe. However you need your GP to conduct simple blood tests and if they suspect this you need to be referred to an APS specialist from a list across the UK: telegraph.co.uk/health/4400...

This disease has been known about for 30 years, but is still frequentily missed, please come back to me if I can help further: hughes-syndrome.org/about-h...

At least rule it out. MaryF

Thanks Mary F, that does sound something to look into. I did have abnormal Bloods so it is a possiblity.

Ok - these are the blood tests: hughes-syndrome.org/about-h...

and this is the list of specialists who understand it both NHS and private: hughes-syndrome.org/self-he...

There is also a forum on HU for this, but do stay on this one also, lots of us are on several. MaryF

Thank you mary. More help than the doctor lol..They did say it was anti bodies in my blood so it could be a possible cause. Definitely makes me want to know more about my blood results.

Please don't be fobbed off, come back to me if you need more information, thyroid issues often go with the disease! MaryF

Think you're right MaryF. I need to be more forceful with the doctors. They have done thyroid test and it seems to be fine.

Hopefully if you take the info along they will listen if not, nab all your test results and go along to The London Lupus Centre at London Bridge, it does cost, but would get your surgery back on track. However now you have the info you should be able to persuade your doctors to look into things. Come back to me if you get stuck! MaryF

I get numbness and tingling in my hands at thr starts of a migraine attack. Usually get that a day of so before head pain starts. If this is something new to you I would get checked out by your GP to rule out anything else.

Oh and I get dizzy feeling all the way through an attack. I take domperidone at the start of an attack to help with the dizziness and nausea

I thought it could be normal of a migraine. It seems to last for days, with it being prolonged and a new symptom I think a GP visit would be a good idea. Thanks.

Slurring of words... Have you been checked for stroke?

msBrightside profile image
msBrightside in reply toRoMo

They won't do an MRI or CT since I had both when I was 15.

Yeah I think you are right. Just feel like I'm wasting my time with every visit.

Everyone's migraines are different, and these are indeed all potential symptoms of an attack for some people, however if it is different from your 'norm' then it is always good to get it checked out by a doctor. Do you have a good treatment plan to stop attacks in their tracks early so that they don't develop into what you describe above? Hemiplegic migraine is a rarer more sever type of attack, but could be a possible diagnosis. You really need to see a headache specialist as Mary suggests. We'd love to see you here at NMC.

Yeah, my dad & auntie get them too all 3 of our symptoms totally different. My neurologist has thought in the past the seizures I have could be migraine related. I don't have any treatment plan. I couldn't even get referred to my neurologist last week. I think a specialist would be very beneficial. I'd love to do that.

Pins and needles is associated with cluster headache. Have you ruled this out?.

msBrightside profile image
msBrightside in reply toHarrieo

It is possible it could be that. It has been mentioned before. Feel like I get every type of headache though.

Yes. I would see a neurologist stat!

Yeah, everyone seems to think that. Glad to feel like it's not just me. I couldn't get referred last week to my neurologist. It was an unfamiliar doctor though. So might try my regular doc and see if I can get an appointment.

Hi, my symptoms are similar to yours, now suffer with Hemiplegic migraines. Strange thing is you don’t have to have a headache to suffer from this condition. It started six weeks ago for me so I’m still new to all this but my symptoms’ are this.

Everything is on the left side of the body only, so it’s like a line has been drawn down the centre of my body, numb face, sometimes a headache, pins needles in the hand, stabbing pains in the arm/ under the arm, throbbing hand, I feel dizzy and my eye can feel a bit weird.

I’m on Topiramate 25mg three times a day and I still have the symptoms, this is my fourth week on the pills, hope things work out for you

It had always been put down to migraines for me. The doctor thinks I have various types. They have never been able to get it under control for me. They have been coming and going recently though they're not as constant. Hope things get better for you too!

These are typical signs of what my neurologist calls 'classic migraine' and are usually the symptoms that define you as a migraine sufferer. This is just based on my own experience of being screened at the migraine clinic - they asked me if I had any of those symptoms. You may also feel your hands and feel while tingling may also feel cold or cooler than your head, which may feel hot to you and need to be cooled down.

Thank you! The neurologist thinks I need permanent migraine medication my doctors haven't did anything about it yet though said it takes at least 4 weeks for the neurologist to write to them. I find myself hot and cold alot especially my head getting really hot or painful like getting hit with a blunt object.
