Read something on internet about migraine could start with drop in levels of serotonin! Just wondered if anyone else had any knowledge or experience of this? Thanks x

Hi there

A lot of migraine prevention treatments are drugs that work on serotonin. (The antidepressant group of drugs). GPs usually try amitryptiline first ( or nortriptyline which is virtually the same but ‘cleaner’ and less sedating). I tried amitryptiline but admit I didn’t persevere as it made me groggy.

By chance, my migraines have improved no end since I’ve been on Venlafaxine and mirtazapine. They are antidepressants and were prescribed as I have PTSD but by chance, they have helped my migraines so I do believe by having more stabilised serotonin levels have helped. So I’m pleased with that 😀. I think it’s the mirtazapine that’s helped mainly. I don’t think these two drugs would be frontline migraine or prophylactic treatments though. I know there has been a bit of research on migraines and mirtazapine and at low doses of 15mg there’s evidence it can help. Not everyone can tolerate mirtazapine. For me it’s ok but some people feel sedated the next day. I only got next day sedation for the first few days then I was ok. It has increased my appetite though and it’s easy to put weight on when taking this drug

😀
