Yes, both are symptoms of depression. They don't necessarily mean you are depressed and you can also be depressed without suffering either of them. If that makes sense!

Hi , yes problems with sleeping and feeling teary and overwhelmed are symptoms of depression. I first experienced these symptoms 2 years ago and really felt overwhelmed as the tearful feeling would strike at any time and I had never experienced this before. Please feel reassured that these symptoms will stop, you have made a very good step towards feeling better by visiting the Action on Depression website as there is lots of very good information and advice on understanding depression, seeking help, treatments and techniques to manage symptoms of depression. In my experience, therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy are very useful as they help you to look at things from a different perspective and can therefore help you to regain control and manage depression. First and foremost though I would recommend that you make an appointment with your GP who will be able to assess your symptoms and discuss treatments. When I visited my GP I was at a very low point, crying most of the time and unable to get out of bed , I was prescribed an anti-depressant and felt improvement within a few days. Personally, I think that medication can be very useful to help you reach a point where you can then go on and benefit from other treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. I hope you feel better soon, please take comfort in the fact that by talking about your depression you have made a good step towards feeling better.

Take care x

I am so glad that I have lots of people to talk about it. My doctor is very good to talk to. I am going to a charity called mind and they are really helping me to get through it.
