my boyfriend had BM when he was 15 years, but 32 years now. i love him but want to be sure if he has recovered completely. am scared i might contract the disease if i share intimacy with him. he is proposing marriage and i love him, but am very worried because my research tells me its contagious.

There will be no risk of you contracting BM from your boyfriend after this length of time.

The risk of contracting bacterial meningitis from someone else is only present in the 7 days prior to them becoming ill/showing symptoms, and then only if there has been prolonged close contact with the person during that time (living together in a household type setting or intimate kissing partners).

Your boyfriend will now have developed some immunity against the type of meningitis he had as a child.

If you have any further concerns, please send a message to our helpline: helpline@meningitis-trust.org where we can help you further.

Thank you very much Claire. Am a bit relieved now.

I also want to know if it is hereditary; what are the chances of his kids getting it.

He has chronic rashes on his face and i suggested he sees dermatologist, is it safe? Or its just an after-effect.

Hi I had bm on a number of occasions my last time I was pregnant with my little girl, I was still with my partner and as soon as I was well enough which was about a month after I contracted the illness we was intermit, I had been in two coma's with bacterial meningitis prior to this one and even on the eve before I fell very poorly I was intimate with him, he never contracted the illness, most meningitis isn't passes on if any, I would say certainly not at any risk with the amount of time that has passed, when he received treatment they would of cleared the bug anyway, the only problem I had was my confidence, I had some scaring which I hated and had lost a lot of weight during my coma which caused problems plus my confidence was effected, although I put a front on and thought no one had noticed lucily my partner at the time had decided to put a special touch to the experience, he cooked a nice meal, we cuddled up in bed watching a film with candles light which where sensitive as my sensis was effected and he complimented me, I soon relaxed and forgot about my confident issues so I would advise this maybe useful for both of you, for you to relax and not worry and for him to feel confident and for it to be special maybe get a take away, pick a nice romance film and enjoy some quality time first giving you both relaxed minds, try not to worry

You have nothing to worry about with regards to getting it from him or him passing it on to you after all this time.

I had Men B septiceamia when I was 18. At the time, everyone I had come into contact with had to have antibiotics straight away as a precaution. I made a full recovery and am now 33 years old. I have scars but they are my wake up call when life gets tough and I know what I have got through already. My husband is not worried at all and has helped me through a lot in the past 6 years.

Enjoy every moment together, talk and spend time together :)
