Amputation - The options.

My son had Meningitis 13 years ago when he was six month's old. He survived but lost his toes and a growth plate plus other damage to his left leg. After countless operations including leg stretch surgery he has taken the decision to go for below leg amputation. His consultant is against this decision, he wanted to amputate the rest of his toe stumps as these keep blistering. We have been told to wait another year, and then he will see us again and also refer us to another consultant for a second opinion. We have been advised that amputation is the best option for him by independent consultants and care experts.

I am unbelievably proud of him. If anyone has gone through this situation and can offer advice for me and Callan I would be so grateful.

Hi Rachel and Callan

My son, Max had meningitis and septicaemia at 4 1/2 months old and he is now 13. He also lost toes (on his right foot) and sustained growth plate damage. He is just about to come out if his 7th lengthening frame.

Please call me and perhaps we could have a chat and maybe get the boys in contact too. The meningitis trust have my contact details. Kirsty Pillings x

Hiya my daughter had all 4 limbs amputated below the joints so she has knees and elbows and a little below. She is walking for the first time on her new private legs as the nhs ones were unusable. It has taken 2 years to get to the stage where her stumps (we dont normally use that word!) are ok and healed. They say it takes 2 years to be 80% healed and i would agree. One leg is growing to an angle as her growth plate has been damaged....i know that she may need this leg lengthening. I can answer any question if you have any.
