Rashes are different for bacterial and viral meningitis. Use glass test for bacterial meningitis. If the rash does not dissappear after pressing it with glass it may be due to bacterial meningitis. They are present generally on extremities (hands and legs) but may be present on other parts of body as well.
The case is different for viral meningitis as it is caused by many viruses. In very few cases the virus is identified. So different viruses may cause different type of rashes. And it is almost impossible to detect virus type by looking at rash. Sometimes even in the spinal tap it is not identified.
Rashes may be present from 1 to 2 weeks(but vary from person to person)
So please consult with an EXPERIENCED doctor (who has treated some patients of meningitis)
The colour should be purple inside and redspot at the outside..but for others disease usually redspot inside and purple at the outside layers. This is the most crucial part when you had meningitis and this rashes usually all over the body. Doctor from neuro had told me when im in hospitalized for almost 3 weeks. Mine rashes all purple deep inside but when i went to clinic for checked GP told me this is just a normal rash. Please be careful sometimes GP are not expertise in this particular area and i suggest check with a doctor from neuro only them can distinguished that spot. For me its a nightmare accident because my temperature goes up until i had a seizure for two times and coma in two days. Doctor from neuro only knew when im hospitalized that i had meningitis encephalitis. They do for spinal tap.
