My husband has suffered 5 years of 'brain episodes' first dignosed as strokes but then migraines. He has had 4 hospital admissions....2017 he had a lumbar punch and had no infection....so three weeks ago I thought he was having another episode, he was crushed to a&e where a lumbar punch found bacterial meningitis n an mri found infection in sinus cavities as antibiotic treatment had already started the lumbar punch couldn't I'd type of bacteria. Our initial treatment was amazing...good bless the NHS, but 3 weeks later I'm scared and feel ill informed of effects of this illness, hubby's memory is good, speech so much better ( still stumbles when tired) but he is still getting headaches, I can't give paracetamol due to doctors thinking he had paracetamol overuse headaches. Thinks are getting better but he is still unable to live a normal daily life is work, go out alone as he gets muddled n confused and I'd say overwhelmed. I still have to work and I just so,so tired and sad. Oh and he is now urinary incontinent 😓 most recent mri with contrast showed no concerns. We gave a neurology appoint in 2 weeks...is there anything more I should be doing to help him. Sorry for long are post but I'm just so scared.
3 weeks in!: My husband has suffered 5 years... - Meningitis Now
3 weeks in!
It's so hard I feelfor you
Have you had epilepsy tests and all blood tests ?
Take care
Acupuncture may help
As someone who has been through multiple illnesses and cared for others with illnesses, the care-taking is very tiring an exhausting as well. If you don't find good spaces for rest, relaxation, healthy food and exercize, you will become ill too. Please take care of yourself. That is not being selfish. If you don't attend to yourself, you can't be there for others. I am sorry for your husband and it sounds like he has numerous health issues going on. I wish I could be more helpful but it sounds as though much of this started before meningitis, so it will be hard to determine what exactly a result of meningitis and what was happening before and would still be happening due to his other health issues. The only things that I understand to be helpful with this are #1 eating healthy (which means CLEAN foods, cut out heavy dairy, processed foods, and sugar as much as humanly possible...lots of organic vegetables, a bit of fruit, and lean organic proteins). #2 good solid rest and don't push past your limits and 3) get walks an exercize in when not resting (take breaks every couple of hours to go on a 15 minute walk)
Thank you for your lovely reply. I work as a carer for people that live with dementia, as well as my hubbie to say I'm feeling a little 'cared' out is an understatement lol. Getting messages like yours give me a real boost. Xx
I’m so glad it can be helpful in any way. I know it’s all genetic info and more easily said than done. Caring is tiring and drains a lot out of you. It’s hard but you always have to remember that a sick you can’t help sick others. Balance is key and finding a way to sneak elements of things that bring you real joy. Meningitis symptoms do eventually subside but it takes a long time and the effects are compounded when a person already has other health issues.
