Hi, I just want to know. How long does it take to recover from bacterial meningitis please. I've got my 1 year old who I've been told he's had inflammation to the brain etc...and it's more severe now. Been in hospital 3 weeks 3 days. Now under rehabilitation unsure for how long. I am so scared and worried for my little boy. Will he be back to normal again?
I am really sorry to hear about you and everyone else in here.
Please tell me..
Thank you

I think it's best taking the lead from the consultants working with him. It really will depend on how much damage has been done. It can be short term or life long as I understand. Wishing your son the best recovery for him x
I would think everyone is different and it depends how much inflammation of the brain there was. It takes time to recover from this but the consultants will be able to guide you. Hope your son has a good recovery.
I am not a Doctor any information i would give you is just my experience. The time it takes to truly get back to normal depends on several things. He may be back to normal when you read this and it is possible it could take time depending on his situation. Just make sure you ask your Doctor any questions you have, he, or she, is your best place to get the answers you need. Hope all is fine soon
Yea, i just wanted to hear others ecperience you know. Too many things going thru your mind and I guess hearing others sorts of reassures you or gives you some kinda peace of mind. Thank you very much. X
Hi, I hope you are ok and looking after yourself too. I really do hope that your son makes a full recovery.
My son has bacterial meningitis (pneumococcal), septicaemia, 2 virus’s and then viral meningitis in the space of 3 weeks (this was just before Christmas).
My son was 11 months old. He also had a blood transfusion, seizures and a cardiac arrest.
He had a high temperatures continuously for 3 weeks.
After all that, I’m pleased to say we finally came home after 5 weeks, one day before his first birthday.
He has damage to his brain but he recognises us and us still our happy boy.
I just wanted to say stick in there, have hope and faith, keep talking to him and I hope he will be just fine.
Everyone’s recovery stage is different. My little boy is struggling to crawl but is trying to walk. His right arm and hand is a little weak but he’s getting stronger. After all that he has been through, we can live with that. It just shows how strong and resilient little ones are.
I don’t think any of us can tell you how long, we’ve all had different experiences and recoveries. I had viral meningitis but it’s taken a long time to recover physically from that and emotionally/mentally even more so. I’m sure he could have some lasting affects or he may not which obviously we all will be praying for for him! He’s lucky to have a parent who is trying to help so much in his recovery. I know one little girl who had meningitis when she was very young, she’s now 11 i believe? She has a hearing aid in one ear but aside from that she is doing great! So please just listen to your doctors and ask them anything you are wondering but try not to get too upset if his recovery takes a little longer than they say! God bless you and your son!
Hello simona. First of all try to be strong because your boy really needs you now. Thank God he is alive and he can continue his fight against this illness by trying to get back to himself before this. No one can assure you about his progress but from my daughters adventure we concluded that young children can really fight to regain their strength and abilities because their brains are still developing. I pray that your son will be as lucky as my daughter and tha he wil go against all odds as my little girl.
B strong n calm. Ur son needs u the most. It can takr months to recover. His immunity can grow with diet like goat milk n protien, soothing massages will also help. After the culture comes positive get the sensitivity report done. There r lot of ways to manage n support
Crawling is an important part of child development...bearing weight on your hands and that position help with several things. It may be worth introducing time to 'crawl play" together to not skip this step.
Helps with language, balance, sense of well being, etc... Physical therapists here on the States say it's even a mood changer for adults to crawl...and they reintroduce it to kids in school who are struggling and may have slipped this step.
