Ups and downs!

It's been a few months since my original post. I have come along way, I am right at the 9 month mark and have seen improvements. I no longer get headaches or neck stiffness. For the most part my vision has fully returned and I have no issues reading. I am so thankful for a God who cares and watched over his children!

I have a question though. Up until the last two weeks and I could feel my old self coming back. I started to get a cold last week and it or something else has really knocked me back. I am dizzer and much much weaker again. Is this part of the recovery process or am I sliding back toward the deep end again. It had really depressed me and worried me that I will go back to being more less bed ridden. Has anyone else experienced the ups and downs. How long? Will it keep getting better?

Gosh I would be interested in a reply to this too, does it reoccur with every virus?

The virus going around right now is really nasty. There is flu, strep, colds, all kinds of nasty things. I got sick a few weeks ago - really sick, with flu-like symptoms. My daughter also. I would be cautious about attributing post meningitis with the harshness of these current viruses. IMH(non medical)O

I agree, Markjohn-SD. This nasty flu virus has hit hard here in Florida...and takes victims out for 3 weeks. And you don't feel back to normal during even the 4th week. So this time of year...especially this year...is a tough time to diagnose true meningitis after effects.

Hi. Just coming up to my first anniversary and like you have made progress in lots of areas. However any virus knocks me back for a week or so and I don't bounce like I used to. I find I get low mentally much more easily than before and sometimes feel overwhelmed with everything. But when I think how far I have come I should, like you, thank God! Heather

I think, because of what our bodies have been through, any time we get an illness, it takes a little longer to get over it, and it's a little harder on us. Our immunity was wiped out when we suffered with the meningitis. Any new illness we get is bound to affect us negatively. Be sure to get plenty of rest, fluids, and consult your doctor if any unusual symptoms occur. Susan

Hi, its good to know from your comments there could be an end to all the 'side effects' eventually! I have had a couple of colds since meningitis and my head has gone 'fuzzier' and I have taken Sudafed, definitely helped me with the head. Like everyone else has said there is a lot of different viruses going round, but it may help you.

I think your body definitely responds differently to sickness after meningitis. If you’re not already, take daily vitamins and some extra vitamin c supplements. Maybe even probiotics. Give your body’s immune system any extra help you can.

So glad you posted. I'm at 5 month stage and going through same thing. Was enjoying feeling normal again and now I too feel weak and lightheaded again. Maybe we try to do too much because we feel normal again?.
