My son lives in a care home in Surrey we live in London. Does the council have duty to provide transport for him to come home to see us?

Hello Redcox

Firstly, I don't know for sure.

Secondly, it's not clear the reason your son is in care but I will assume he is physically or learning disabled in some way.

I have an adult brother who lives lives in a residential care home in West Sussex but funded by Surrey.

He has a Motability vehicle but likes riding on all types of transport, so the care home applied for a free travel pass which coveres him and his carer for free travel on public transport. I don't know if this covered him for travel into London, or only around West Sussex, but I expect not.

If your sons situation is similarly to my brother's he is likely receives benefits and may be in receipt of mobility allowance too, the purpose of this is to cover travel costs unless he has a Motability vehicle, which I'm guessing he doesn't.

Therefore, if he can get a free travel pass he will likely have to pay the additional costs into London from him mobility allowance. I would be very surprised if the council will pay but you never know. It might be worth asking as they will/may explain what your son needs to do under his particular circumstances.

I have had to make assumptions based on my brother's circumstances but I hope it may help in some way.

Kind regards,

P
