Good morning.

I have had a question about how the school closures and home schooling has been for parents with a learning disability.

Are you a parent with a learning disability? Have you been helping your children with their home schooling?

How have you coped? Did you get any extra help?

We'd love to hear from you.

Thank you

Sarah

Hi sarah,

I have been home schooling my child with a learning disability, speech language and communication needs since lockdown started. The school provided me with a learning resource pack and timetable for my child. A member of staff from his class contacts me By phone weekly to check if all ok. His class teacher sent me target work and examples on What to do with my son to Help achieve them. I have Had work sent to me by his speech and language therapist and phone calls. We have also scheduled in a couple of video calls to go through a specific pack of work so I know how to use it. I have also had contact from my sons Occupational Therapist assisitant by phone. I feel I have had good support but it is not easy home schooling. I have experienced a lot of challenging behaviour from my son. He has very poor attention so very difficult to keep on task. However, I feel I am doing my best for him in the circumstances we are all faced with in these very challenging times.

thanks for this Stoneart

You are doing an amazing job. It sounds like you are getting quite a lot of support, although I know it isn't the same.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Sarah,

I didn't get anything from my son school. A few calls at the beginning of the pandemic. But I did invest my time with my son in building his YouTube channel by engaging him with something he likes to build his confidence and life skills. Please see his channel in YouTube Ridwan chowdhury 123 for tasty recipes and how kept me occupied few hours a day. I hope it helps!
