Mum had a stroke. She has been discharged and recouping at a friend's. Wants a social needs assessment when she leaves to go to her own home. Does she apply now or wait til she goes home? Worried that waiting list might be very long (she's in Leeds).

Social Worker

they should have done a needs assessment before she left hospital. Her friend might have said something like “I’ll look after her” I think you or her friend should contact the duty social worker straight away, for her local area. You can usually find contact information online. There is usually a phone number you ring for adult services. One option is “I’m concerned for someone’s immediate welfare” That’s the button to push. Say that your mum’s friend has no obligation to care for her and use arguments such as that her friend may lack appropriate qualifications and probably doesn’t have time to offer any support beyond short—term emergency care “as a friend”. Say that you’re concerned but have your own personal commitments and that your mum is at risk of developing secondary conditions if her situation isn’t normalised with appropriate care and support and equipment in her own home. Your bit of relevant legislation is Section 9 (I think) the 2014 Care Act.
