If you have a BBC account, log into the BBC iPlayer and watch BBC East Midlands News story about the mismanagement of the funds of a family's brother in care and the failings of the local authority and his care home. The family is looking to the police and to the courts for a private prosecution.

Apparently everything was done in the brothers "best interest".

My son has been in care for many years we’ve had so many items stollen ruined broken plus sadly abuse of every kind including financial abuse believe me it’s rife out there thy see these vulnerable people as cash cows and anyway they can bleed them of money thy will it’s disgusting.

I believe you Jo.

What can be done though? This country can spend millions on things like the Covid Enquiry to hold "top people" accountable but what routes are open to us relatives when abuse of every kind is rife and often in plain sight - under the 'best interests' umbrella of course!

Under the providers interest one of the care homes he was in was chrging 92p a mile and one day they took my son on a jolly to all the places of no interest to him but only to staff and wanted me to pay £300 for a trip out I refused theres was so much financial abuse in that hope plus all kinds of other abuses and safeguardings it has been closed. Plus the last home he was in the same that’s under a police and safeguarding enquiry at present my son was one of those abused and there was every abuse going on there He was charged £80.00 for a trip to chessington that never happened just shameful and then he was charged for a music session for an hour £80-00 unbelievable honestly you couldn’t write it there’s all sorts of laws being broken and committed and absolutely nothing is done about it.

Hi just found it and watched it. I remember reading about this a little while ago. It doesn't surprise me that the local authority and ombudsman etc don't think it was unreasonable how the money was spent. As his family said the money should have been used for things to make his life more comfortable and easier. They are taking out a civil case out against the LA and care home, I wish them good luck.

I have just watched this on Iplayer and Im disgusted at the way Ians finances were abused .I have also read the link.on the bbc news page which gives this abuse in more detail . . Why on earth was a care worker allowed to open an account for him . I agree with his sisters that the money spent on toys and childrens and adult clothes, perfume and zumba classes ??? dont match what thier dear brother needed to make his life better and for the care home to not see a problem beggars belief . I have court of protection for my sons finances and I have to send bank statements and fill in annual reports which they go through with a fine tooth comb to see what I have spent on his behalf which is not a lot as he only recieves his benefits which the council take some to pay for his daycare so there is not a lot left , he lives with me full time . . . I am so worried about my adult son going into care as I hear so many bad stories . The place I looked at only a few weeks ago which I thought was ok has just been reported for abuse of its residents by care staff so its under investigation . It had high marks fron CQC only a last year ?? My son is 40 next year and the worry about what will happen to him when Im no longer around, its my biggest worry . I hope Ians sisters get honest answers as to what happened to his finances . RIP Ian . Im sorry life gave you such a bad deal .

Thank you.

I met a (caring) carer by chance the other day who gave me some insight into what really goes on inside several care homes she worked at. The covering up, the abuse of residents and their funds, the bullying by the senior management, keeping families at arms length, the lack of support from the local authorities, CQC included etc etc (I could go on). She cited numerous individual cases where she had seen these events first hand.

Like me though, she feels powerless to hold these people to account. She said that unless you have a secret camera recording the events, abuse is likely to continue. The more it continues, the more these so called carers will believe it is the right way to care for the residents. It is criminal.

In your research, have you been able to find a group of people (true carers and families alike) who have formed a group who have the teeth to be able to challenge these practices and hold those responsible to account?
