I have a nearly 18 year old with Autism, Adhd, a learning disability, ocd, anxiety and a rare chromosome disorder. We are transitioning from school to college and from the children’s disabled team to Adult Social Care. In the last year we have had 3 different social workers all of whom have asked ridiculous questions about my child’s disabilities, she currently has 3 hours a week after school with an autism charity 2:1 to enable her to access the community and also give me a little extra time. From September college will only be 3 days a week as that’s all out council will pay for on her EHCP. We’ve asked for a package to be put together for the other 2 days with her current provider who can accommodate this but Adult Social Care don’t want to pay for it. There is someone who gets this service from the same provider and they get 45 hours a week. We are asking for 12 hours a week (term time) and 4 hours a week in holidays. All of the professionals involved have agreed this service needs to be in place. Does anyone have any advice on how to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible?? We’re only a few weeks from losing this service as once she’s 18 unless adult social care will pay for it we cannot get it. Obviously I’m not in a position to pay for it myself or I would.

Adult Services
get an independent social worker to fight for you as they know the laws around all this and how to deal with them in the right way to hopefully get what you need. Try and research for one if you can’t find anyone I know somebody who could advise you. She’s done an amazing job for me that’s all I can tell you. So sorry you’re going through this it’s really tough.
Sorry to hear you are having to fight for support for your daughter, but sadly this is a very familiar situation for many families. Going to see your MP asap might help get some pressure on the local authority, we have found ours to be very helpful. Good luck.
I’ve drafted an email to my MP ready to send if this isn’t sorted out this week, I just don’t get how Adult Social care can be so unhelpful. I know disabilities aren’t their specialty and there should be a separate team for disabled services as there are with children. It’s just there’s no support or guidance once you enter adult years
Hi Elle,
I am so sorry, you have had a bad experience with social services in relation to your daughter, that I am sure has had an impact on your mental health too? I have had similiar experiences too, and reason why I am fighting for a adult's disability commissioner for England, who can make changes, represent our adult child and families. Good luck, having your local MP involved is a good idea
I’m so sorry to hear this, it really is awful just how much of a battle it can be to get the adequate care and I hope besides this issue you and your family are doing well. I also think that going to your local MP would be a good idea in this case, if you haven’t already. Lastly I suppose that reaching out to Mencap could be helpful too, as they may have more ideas where to point you, you can call Mencap’s Learning Disability Helpline at 0808 808 1111 or email them on helpline@mencap.org.uk if you prefer. Wishing you the best of luck getting this resolved
Hi Elle1984Have you thought about applying to your LA for a "Direct Payment" to pay for the extra hours you need
