My wish for a fuller social life

Hi My name is Daniel and I have Fragile X which is the result of a chromosome abnormality. I have some learning disability and I have trouble with speech but I am quite capable in many things. I have worked full time at Tesco for 31 years and get on well with my work mates. I would like to have a fuller social life and meet new people. I do have several holiday each year with Funtastic Breaks but the other clients I meet on these holidays usually live too far away to continue friendships.

It's on Zoom Daniel. You have to click the link at the time and then you can join and meet new friends and have fun. You just need a phone/laptop/computer and click on the link, Carol :-)

My son used to go to a club called Gateway run by Mencap when he lived in Essex. Apart from the weekly evening events they also organised other things. He also has Fragile X syndrome. Maybe you could find a group near you.

Hello bicycleface , it might be worth having a look at Mencap's list of network partners, who are groups that work in local areas, to see if there is a group near you who have opportunities for you to socialise.

You can search through the groups by area on our website here: mencap.org.uk/search/groups

You could also try getting in touch with our Learning Disability Helpline - you can email them on helpline@mencap.org.uk or call on 0808 808 1111. They should be able to let you know if there are any services in your area.

Hope that helps. 🙂

I would contact adult social services in your local authority and see if they can help you find some social groups. Ask your GP if they have a social prescriber who can help. Also your local library might have a list of groups and clubs near you.
