I am wondering what the process is to be able to get my sons GP to give me test results sent by a hospital? I have just telephoned and they have said they will only tell the care home. I feel this unacceptable, especially as I attend virtually all appointments with my son. He lacks capacity in this area, so needs help with his medication and on going health needs.
Do I need deputyship for this, or is there a simpler process?

I would also like to know if you find anything out, as I am in the same situation and have had the same problem. We are in the process of applying for Deputyship for health and welfare, and it has been about a year and a half now. Hopefully we are on the final stages now
hi there I believe a family member can be a named person who is entitled to access this information but please check out the correct term with mencap and then call back the GP and get the information. You could perhaps speak to a doctor at the GP surgery and explain the situation which might be quicker. In future I would get the deputyship if your son lacks capacity or apply for a power of attorney if he does have some capacity. Good luck.
yes you’d need deputyship and legally the care home don’t have to discuss it with you. What sort of relationship do you have with the home? Our son’s home discuss everything with us and phone for advice and to see what our wishes are etc when it comes to medical matters.
my son is 56 and lives in supported living. I’ve always attended his medical appointments with his key worker who keeps me informed of any medical or other appointments he has. I also have a good relationship with the care provider. Both me and his key worker are given information regarding his treatments and procedures. I don’t have deputyship which I know some people have to apply for in order to get this kind of information but I do know that the care provider or medics don’t have to share this information with me as my son is over the age of consent. I think it depends on where you live and what kind of relationship you have with your loved ones support network, including healthcare staff.
hi. I think that it’s clear that some people are able to access the information they need as a result of the “goodwill” of agencies caring for our loved ones. The only way to guarantee that you receive the information you need is to have deputyship.I can’t see the point of avoiding the inevitable however long it takes and in the meantime appealing to the better nature of those charged with the care of our adult children.
Hello booked I have the NHS app on my smart phone and you can ask the surgery for proxy access which means you can see your record and your sons record.2 points to bear in mind.You can order repeat prescriptions and see test results ordered by the gp and list of consultations at surgery but you will not see documents that have been written from the hospital. The hospital will normally write to the surgery and to your son .The other point is that you of course need a smart phone. It sounds as if you don't have a good relationship with the care home? Will they not give information. Are you accepted as next of kin?
