Norfolk/Norwich - Things to do for adults with learning disabilities

We are looking to move from SW Hertfordshire to Norfolk next year, most likely just outside of Norwich. We love it there and are finally in the position to move but it's going to be a big change for my step son who is in his early 20s. He has medium/severe learning disabilities and needs support 24/7.

He is pretty settled at the moment going to a community centre four days a week where he does cooking, pottery, drama and music. He is also using another service on the fifth day so has a full week.

At the moment we are trying to research what is available in Norfolk and how much these services will cost. If we need council funding/direct payments I assume we'll have to wait until we've actually moved before applying. If anyone could point us in the right direction that would be great.

His Mum currently takes him everywhere and works part-time in between. But once we move she will have to give up work until we have established a routine for him. The last thing we want is for him to be stuck at home every day with nothing to do. If there isn't much to do in the area for those with learning disabilities we have to rethink our plans.

Thanks

Would you be able to help us with regards to facilities in SW hertfordshire as we may possibly move there with our 31 year old son with Autism and severe learning difficulties

It depends on where you're moving to but there is a good community village in Aldenham called Delrow. There is also the Inclusion Project, Sunnyside Trust and Electric Umbrella that I know of. It would depend on the level of care your son needs though as to what would be suitable. Some of these places you can pay extra for 1 to 1 care, some you will need to bring a carer yourself.

Thank you Rich. We were told of better chances of finding care providers specific for LD in Hertfordshire. Please correct me if I am wrong, hence plan moving to an area where we have better chances of finding care, that would be our preference

hi,

Sorry only just seen your post.

We’re in Norwich, my daughter with MLD attends a couple of good places. There are lots of care farms, day service centres and clubs/groups around. You should be able to find plenty of suitable options, depends which part of Norfolk you’ll be in (it’s a big county!)

Best of luck with the move!

Thanks. We're mainly looking at E / SE Norwich or just outside in one of the smaller villages. Although what's happening with the economy at the moment we may have to put our plans on hold for a while!

Can you recommend any places like you've mentioned so we can start researching? Feel free to message me if you don't want to name them on here. I've found a few on Google but it's always good to get personal recommendations.
