Hi all.

my son has a social communication and speech delay. I am waiting to be formally diagnosed from a specialist Paediatrician and still waiting for my block of sessions with speech and language. He is four years old and is due to start full time education in September, because of his need I have been asked by the SENCO to complete a EHCP form to enable him of getting one to one support. My son is beginning to talk , yet when he gets frustrated he urinates everywhere or knocks items he knows to be valuable over if he is not constantly supervised, as well as screaming and crying to get what he wants. Even when i explain to him he does not fully understand. How do i support him with his behaviour ?

Bless you that’s so hard for both of you there should be a behaviour management team under the child mental health community services why don’t you give them a call and ask them if they can help or speak to your G P or your social worker if you have one.

Thank you for your advice, in your opinion, don't i need a referral from a paediatrician before referral from the behavioural team or would i be able to refer myself? Thanks again :)

Speak to your health visitor, they should be able to support you or signpost you to local support. Alternatively, you should have a Early Help team in your area that can support. Most local authorities have parenting support services with specific parenting groups for children with social communication difficulties. Although he has started talking using visuals may help him to communicate when he’s struggling. I’m sure many of us on here have been where you are now and know how hard it can be. Take care of yourself too.

Morning, thank you so much for your reply. I initially made contact with my local health visitor when he was three. She referred me speech and language as there appeared to be only a speech delay at the time. When he started nursery for part time (3 hours) it was picked up that there were additional needs and his hours was reduced to 1.5 hours. The SENCO made a referral to Pediatrics after observations and it was March that she sent o ff. I have heard that the waiting times can be long, around July i completed a EHCP application as he is started full time in September. Hopefully it will speed up the process. I will also seek additional help from the Early help team and continue using visual aids. Just waiting for him to see a Pediatrician, the referral was made in March this year. Thanks again, I appreciate your encouragement and reply, have a lovely day.
