Dual funding by social and health
Not as far as I’m aware no
Hi there. As far as I am aware the college is funded by education and the residential care is funded by health if there is health funding agreed. If there is no health funding then social services fund the residential costs. If a person is fully health funded there is no contribution but I don’t know what happens if the young person is funded by social services. They may need to make a contribution but I do not know as it didn’t affect my son.
When a young person goes to residential college regardless of how the college place is funded you need to inform the DWP. Even though my son was health funded he did lose his daily PIP allowance for the time he was at college. He was able to claim it when he came home in the holidays. So it depends on whether the residential is 52 or 38 week placement as to how much PIP is lost. the mobility component is unaffected. Hope this helps.
Does your son have continuing healthcare care funding or is he funded by Social services?
My son doesn’t pay a contribution as he has CHC funding. So they pay the care side and the education side is funded by the LA.
Speaking to two other mums last week (who don’t have CHC funding in place) I was surprised as they don’t pay a contribution either but neither of them were also aware their boys were entitled to ESA or UC!
Education is funded by welsh government. Then rest dual funded by health and social. My son will stay on my tax credits claim and child benefit until he is 20..then Im not sure what he will be entitled to
I’m not sure about Wales but my son gets universal credit as we’re in a UC area. Some young people get ESA. UC is about £600 per month. I had the finance team contact me the day he turned 18 to get me to apply, I guess that’s because at the time he was funded by SS so they wanted a contribution towards his respite care! Until your son turns 20 they won’t be able to take a contribution from him if he has no income of his own. TC are in your name, not his.
We’re in the process of being re-assessed by CHC and my son is leaving college in 2 weeks and moving to a permanent residential placement. if he isn’t funded 100% by CHC I’m dreading what’s he’s going to be left with once he has to pay a contribution. He’s incredibly expensive! I haven’t heard anything yet and the assessment was a few weeks back so keeping everything crossed!
Its the same in Wales ..UC. Thats what I thought.. if he is on my claim there will be no contribution. Im just unsure if when he is 20 and the dual award
I’m just not sure. As I said I spoke to 2 other mums who’s son are at college with my son and they don’t pay a contribution despite being funded by SS. They also didn’t know about ESA or UC and have not claimed it for their sons (one is 21 and the other 22) and have not had a financial assessment done. It’s confusing as one of the boys is moving this year into full time residential like my son and the mum still hasn’t been told about paying a contribution. I don’t get it! When we had our CHC assessment last month we were warned that if it wasn’t awarded at 100% again then my son would need to pay a contribution.
