My son currently gets PIP ( enhanced for both ). It is unsure who will fund care at residential college, CHC, Social care or both. How do these affect his PIP?

My son was three way funded until he left education then continuing healthcare took ove all the funding once he’d left education

My son was fully funded by the Local Authority as the college was named in his EHCP. The care component of PIP will stop whilst your son is at college and you claim from the DWP for nights spent at home . This is either done by phoning them after each visit home or filling in a one page form with the dates. The form route takes longer for the money to arrive in the bank but does mean you don’t have to hang on the phone for hours waiting to speak to someone. The mobility component is unaffected.

If he’s funded 100% by CHC his benefits aren’t affected although the care element isn’t paid whilst he’s there. The mobility element is paid as usual and if he comes home you can claim the care element whilst he’s home. If he gets ESA or universal credit again it’s not affected if he’s 100% CHC funded. If funding is split with social care or funded solely by social care he’ll have to pay a contribution towards his care.

My son is at residential college (38 weeks) and Is funded 100% by CHC. His UC and mobility element of pip are his and i claim the care element of pip and carers allowance when he comes home in the holidays.

If he’s over 18 and not getting ESA or UC you should apply for it.

Hi reading your post re CHC does this depend on the disability. How do they assess this

BenjiB profile image
BenjiB in reply toSallyyana

yes It depends on level of need, medical issues etc. My son has no medical issues but does have severe learning disabilities and challenging behaviour

Is he 18? If so it doesn’t matter if he’s in school full time. My son got UC from the time he turned 18 but didn’t leave school until 19.

Yes he is 19. We get child tax credits and child benefit for him

Sorry can I ask about carers allowance also. If my son goes term time I wont be entitled to that, only when he is at home. How have you managed around that with looking for work etc

I don’t work. It’s just too difficult especially with the pandemic as he has been home alot. This is his last year at college and I’m looking for next, full time placements and then I’ll go back to work. His placement is 38 weeks and sometimes i wish I’d looked for a 52 week one! However it’s been the best thing for him. He lives in a beautiful place snd really loves it. July is going to be really difficult!

My son has no medical needs but is severely disabled. He is non verbal ,no mobility and challenging behaviour. He has been settled in supported living for 2 yrs now. Would he be CHC funded?

He’d have to be assessed for CHC funding. Our social worker when we were social care funded sorted the assessment.

I thought you had to have medical needs

Does any benefits stop when receiving CHC funding?

I am not sure tbh

No. My son is CHC funded and gets PIP (although no care element whilst he lives at college) and he also gets UC. He doesn’t have to pay any contribution to his care either.
