My son is 26 and is working part time in a garden centre. He has difficulties understanding and interpreting instructions in the work place and struggles in the job when he is busy. Does anyone have any details of an advocate he can use to help him communicate with his employer? We live in South Essex.

Hi My son is 25 & is in the same position, he works full time in a factory. He can only follow one instruction at a time. He cannot read staff notice boards & finds it difficult to speak out if there is a problem. He lacks communication skills.
To resolve this, I have a contact in HR . I have explained his difficulties & I email her with any issues. The Health & safety manager is also aware of his problems.
His employer should have have a duty of care towards an employee with a disability. And they should make allowances & provide some support at work. Ask for. Mentor until he is more confident & established.
Also pictorial signs & notices are helpful.
Hope this helps.
Good luck
