Today, my son had his 2nd COVID jab. Horray!

He has his own flat/tenancy within a supported living complex.

I gave him 10 mls of liquid paracetamol, which was ok'd by the GP who gave the vaccine. However, I'm now thinking I'm going to get accused of not acting in his best Interests because i didn't ask staff to get it from the Meds cupboard (it was off the shelf medication).

Have i done anything wrong?

It is great that you realise that giving your son medication wasn’t the safe thing to do but no harm was done and you will remember to follow the protocols next time, I’m sure. If you are still worried, perhaps have a word with the staff who oversee the medication at your son’s home but I expect they will say the same. 🙂

Great news your son has had his 2nd jab. It must be a huge relief for both of you.

Best Interests is a matter of what is in the best interests of the person concerned. Your son needed paracetamol, the attending GP approved it, and you managed him taking it in a safe manner.

I really wouldn't worry that you didn't ask staff to get it from the Meds cupboard on this occasion. As a parent your views matter on Best Interests and waiting for staff would delay your son receiving treatment. In my view you acted responsibly.

The care service have to meet CQC requirements for med storage and safety to ensure meds are stored as required and to ensure no other person can access your sons meds for safety reasons. They are also responsible for keeping his records up to date to ensure correct dosing and for the records they must keep for legal reasons.

Another consideration for over the counter meds is how they might interact with regular meds a person might be taking.

Did you record it on his med sheet to ensure everyone responsible for his care is aware?

Perhaps discuss it with the manager responsible for your sons care to ensure you are all on the same page in the future.
