Hi, does anyone know of a yoga class/teacher where it would be suitable to take my daughter who is 18 and has Down Syndrome, we are in Welwyn Garden City. Or any other gentle exercise class? Thanks.

Hi Barneydino,Have a look into qigong as well In case you find a group doing it..it is a little bit similar to yoga, a lot easier to do,and can-if needed be done sat on chairs...and can be self taught from beginner qigong videos on YouTube.

I struggle to follow these so it’s not for me but for both of you,is it worth having a look at some beginner videos?

Hello

Just a thought but have you seen these accessible online classes?

mencap.org.uk/about-us/our-...

They are free and take place via Zoom every Tuesday and Thursday at 11am.

I also had a quick look for anything obvious in your area. Are you near Gosling Sports park as they have some information about accessible sport on their website -

better.org.uk/leisure-centr...

I hope this helps a little.

Best wishes

Sarah

Hi, I don't know any teachers personally in WGC, but do know of one in Hatfield I could recommend. I belong to lots of yoga teacher groups on Facebook (I teach myself), so could ask on there for you? How does she feel about using zoom? Many of us are only teaching remotely at the moment, so if she's OK with that - it might open up many more teachers who are experienced in working with young people with additional needs. Let me know how I can help :-).

Hi, thank you for your reply, If you could let me know about the Hatfield teacher that would be great. I would also be interested in the zoom idea too please.

I was hoping it was something my daughter and myself could do together, however it might just be me doing it and her watching! Got to start somewhere!

Thank you for your help,

Sharon.

Hi Sharon - will do (just waiting for a friend to email it to me) - I think it's quite important that the teacher has experience of working with people with additional needs - for instance, as I am sure you are aware, many people with DS have joint laxity and muscle hypotonia and this needs to be taken into account when creating any sort of programme. From a physical perspective in my yoga classes, I always look at building strength to compensate for this. There are so many benefits to gain from yoga (I came as a stressed teacher and Mum to a boy with ASD), it has helped me immensely over the years - so much that I trained to teach. Might be great for you too :-). Will be in touch x

I recommend 4motioncic.com/ with variety of zoom classes. Lovely community project. They do "Dance United" inclusive class. If your daughter likes dance she will love this one. And variety of yoga classes for all abilities. They are based in Windsor but most of the classes are zoom or hybrid studio+zoom.

Hope this helps.
