Hi my grandson goes out with a company who send 2 carers for him every day in their company car the other month my grandson was having terrible behaviours & on his way to the centre they take him to he had a behaviour where he ripped the material on top of car & pulled light from top of car too (inside) I was informed of the incident & that was it until the other day the company have been in touch with social worker & said my grandson has to pay for the damage

My question is is this correct as I thought surely companies that deal with special needs people with behaviour problems would be insured to cover for things like this

Could someone advise please

Hello Depressed

I cant advise on this but as you point out if they use a car for business then "vandalism" should be part of their comprehensive insurance.

I say vandalism because this is similar to someone "keying" a car or other damage and they should have bought an insurance to cover.

It may be that you/your grandson may have to pay an excess but not the total cost.

Someone else may come along and give some better advice.

An excess is something between £ 50-£150 of any accident which the owner has to pay before work is done, The insurance company ask you to pay it so that you dont claim for a small scratch or other minimal damage.

Good luck with that and come back and tell us what happened. It must be very upsetting when that happens .

Hello Depressed7

This sounds like a very stressful situation. Usually, if you use a car for work, you must have business insurance to cover that.

I haven't heard of this before so it might be worth calling our helpline on 0808 808 1111

(or emailing helpline@mencap.org.uk) and see if they have come across this before.

Best of luck.

Sarah
