Rights to… brings together parents, carers, educators, activists, and artists to ask how we can create a network of support and solidarity and resist disability discrimination in the education system.

The Special Rights booklet, published by the Serpentine Galleries in 2018, shares the stories of how children labelled with ‘special educational needs and disabilities’ are being failed, ignored and excluded by the education system. A year on from the publication launch, Rights to… brings together people who care.

In the face of ongoing funding cuts, we ask: How might adopting a rights approach improve experiences for children? How best do we come together to create a network of support and solidarity?

Special Rights is a long term project by artists Emma McGarry and Adam J B Walker working with children, their parents and staff from the Portman Early Childhood Centre in North Westminster. The project is part of Changing Play, an ongoing partnership between the Serpentine and the Portman Early Childhood Centre in Westminster, which brings together artists, children, families and educators to critically reconsider early years education and care.

Refreshments will be provided.

This event is BSL interpreted. It is held at Hoxton Hall, 130 Hoxton Street, London, N1 6SH, the venue is fully wheelchair accessible. We are pleased to offer bursaries for people who would otherwise be unable to attend Rights to… due to travel costs or childcare commitments.

Please contact joannas@serpentinegalleries.org for more information about bursaries and access information or requirements.

For more information, please refer to serpentinegalleries.org/learn/changing-play/rights.

*Please note due to feedback from our collaborators we have changed the title of this event to reflect our commitment to inclusive education.
