My daughter 16 is really challenging right now. I think ocd is raised because of anxiety. This means checking, flushing toilets , not sleeping and not doing anything except being in n her... now confiscated phone. Constant questions repeating everything ..... what to do? How to handle it?

Ocd and learning difficulties

Hi, welcome. Is there a particular reason why her anxiety is raised at the moment? My own son with Downs syndrome, Autism and Schitzophrenia has extremes of anxiety due to the psychosis. He will then like your daughter become repetative, check for danger, pace etc. We initially gave medication and once the anxiety had reduced slightly were able to slowly introduce distraction, activity and routine. The more he does activity wise the less the anxiety presents in extremes, we still have it daily but not 24/7. Your GP may be able to prescribe something to reduce the anxiety and allow her to sleep and then fill her time with activity, cooking, walking, sport, anything and everything possible. I hope this helps somewhat and keep us updated if you can. Best wishes.
Thanks that is helpful. Right now going through morning of door opening closing toilet flushing and repeated questions... how do you not go insane??? She sleeping better and I think you are quite right about activities but how do you do it? With work and other children and all the next their stuff? You sound amazing!
Hi, I'm not amazing but have learnt through trial and error, lots of errors. Go and speak to the GP he can refer you to an agency to help with her anxiety such as CAMHS. Is there anyone that can help with activities such as family or friends as I appreciate how hard it is with your work commitments and other children. Could you all do some arts and crafts together, a walk around the park anything you can fit in. Your only human and can only do so much on your own so take any help you can and it will take time. I wish you well on the journey and you can always give the helpline a call 0808 808 1111 they may have more suggestions re her anxiety. Very best wishes.
