Hello Bristolroverd5555

Welcome and thanks for posting your question.

It is good that you are planning ahead. You will probably need to talk to the Adult Social Care department of your local authority. They will do an assessment of needs under the Care Act 2014 and decide what your daughter needs.

It all comes down to your daughter (and what would suit her best) , what is available where you live, and how the move is going to be funded.

There are so many different housing options that it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are a few pages on the Mencap website that might be a useful starting point:

* mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su...

* mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su...

It would probably be good to have a chat with one of our trained helpline advisors. You can call them on 0808 808 1111

or email helpline@mencap.org.uk. This is free and confidential, and they will be able to say more about what is available near you.

Please let us know how you get on. It is something that affects a lot of people.

Thanks

Sarah

I can understand why. I don't have any experience but I wish you get to find the best solution for your daughter. Best wishes

Hi Mark,

I’m one of the information and advice officers and I work for the learning disability helpline. We hear a lot from families who are worried about the next steps for their loved ones, and what options they might have.

Sarah is right, the first step is a needs assessment to find out exactly what support your daughter needs, and what she is eligible for. It is the foundation to her care and support plan so it’s really important it’s right and that you agree that it properly reflects your daughter’s day to day needs – it will determine things like how many hours support she will get, and how that support should be delivered. As you can imagine, this is vital before any potential move to make sure that the proposed setting can deliver the support your daughter needs. Activities and weekends and time with family can be factored in too. Ask for a copy of the assessment and don’t be afraid to challenge it if you disagree with it – we can help with this if you need to. It has to follow the statutory guidance set out in the Care Act.

Your local authority should have a link on their website about adult social care. Most local authorities have a list of care providers too, so it’s worth having a look to see what’s out there.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has inspection reports of homes too: cqc.org.uk/

The Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) has a useful booklet about top tips when choosing a support provider. You can download it on this link: vodg.org.uk/publications/to...

I hope that helps, and I hope that your daughter finds somewhere she can be settled and happy.

Margaret
