It’s Friday and so we need to fluff up those pom-poms and start putting on some moves for our fabulous eventers this weekend. Are we ready?
First up is amazing Kalessin who is doing the Mighty Hike tomorrow, a Marathon long walk in the Stour Valley in aid of Macmillan. Those views will be worth the walk so we’d love to see some photos afterwards 🙂
Then on Sunday we have our very own Super Sprinter RunBrianRun who will be competing in the 100/200m at the Masters Inter Area Championships. Are you doing the relay too Brian? Whatever event you're running we know you’ll be absolutely fabulous!
Also on Sunday, is our intrepid aliboo70 who will be running the Bembridge 5 mile trail race on the Isle of Wight. Looks and sounds amazing Ali! Lots of photos please.
Thanks everyone! I've barely done anything lately so will be a plod! Also C3PO her husband and daughter running too will try and get some nice photos xxx
Thank you so much for the pompoms guys! I knew I could hear distant cheering from somewhere. I finished the Mighty Hike in a fraction under 10 hours which surprisingly (to me) put me almost exactly halfway down the list of 600-odd finishers.
It was very interesting to do the walk as a runner, albeit a very slow one. There were a lot of youngish participants who were clearly relying on youth and strength, and not enough training, to get them through, and judging by some of the comments on the Mighty Hike FB group, they have had a pretty tough time over the past couple of days.... toenails falling off is the least of it! The day got gradually hotter so hydration was important, and the last few miles were knackering and very dusty.
I bought a pair of light Saucony trail running shoes a few months ago specifically with this walk in mind. I think they were a really good choice: not too hot, not too heavy, firm enough under foot to cope with pebbly paths and tracks across fields, and reasonably comfortable. I also, after experimenting with various hydration options, bought a Harrier Curbar 5L race vest which was super light and comfortable, took my 2L water bladder (bought on Amazon) and had a pocket where I could carry my phone on my chest.
I was happy with the training I did too. Since Covid in April I haven't really been running more than 5k, but walking was much easier and my longest practice hike was 22 miles. Also i did study the briefing notes quite carefully, and read the comments on FB from previous participants, so I wasn't surprised when there were HILLS - not your kind of hills Cmoi but quite steep for Suffolk!
Annoyingly I've had a tummy ache on and off for a couple of weeks, no idea what's causing it. I thought it had gone, but it came back overnight immediately before the event. I couldn't have done a run with a funny tummy but walking seemed to be possible, although lunch was probably a mistake - I can see on my Garmin track how much I slowed down after eating, and I really didn't eat very much! So on balance I'd say that walking a marathon is easier than running a half.
Hi IP thank you for the Pom poms 😊 I completely missed this, but I am able to give an update.
I had a very successful day despite my anxiety getting the better of me several times! 🙄
I came 4th in the 200 meters knocking 1.1 seconds off my PB. I think having the world champion on my inside definitely helped!
I got the same time as the 3rd placed runner (27.18), but they gave me 4th, which tbh I’m delighted with. The field was very strong and they were all faster than me on paper.
My relay team came 2nd which topped off the day perfectly.
There were teams from England, Scotland, Wales.
The picture is from behind the start line of the women’s 100m
I’m not entered for any more races this season yet, so I’ll be focusing on training and targeting that 90% age grading!
Gosh, that’s brilliant Brian!!! Congratulations and very well done to you 🤩 I think you need to put a separate post up about this, there are so many fabulous achievements here that I know your VRBs will love reading about.
Thank you IP, I’ll make a separate post. 👍 I’m currently 88.3%. The trick will be finding that elusive 1.7% which is going to be a challenge! I LOVE challenges 😂
