As I was running this evening, two young lads (with not the healthiest physique), maybe 15-16 years old, started mimicking me. To their horror I stopped running and approached them. I said, “you’re welcome to join me on my run but…” and looking them up and down continued, “…looking at you, I don’t think you’d be able to make it.”
They both laughed and said they’d been tortured by my response. However I feel a bit mean having had a jab at their weight. I would never do this normally, but since they took the p*ss out of me, it was kind of a reflex action. Also, I get fed up of people taking the mickey out of runners and especially comments to female runners. Was I right or wrong? I just hope they think twice about it next time.

I think you were right, i might have done the same, it’s not on that people think they can take the p out of someone else and maybe they will think in future
Really not sure..... they do say that Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness...🤔
I've had a young girl doing that with me, I just encourage her saying "yep that's it" in spite of the mean way she's mimicking me. She stopped after a while, got bored with it.
Standard Boro comeback to be fair, dog eat dog up here and often the best banter wins! I'd say ya have put both the cheeky Doyle's in there place and they will both think twice next time before opening there traps! Doyle's! Hahaha that's so Boro 🤣🤣🤣
When I was right at the start of C25k a group of lads asked me if I wanted a crisp as I looked as though I needed one and my response was “come and join me”. They didn’t! Ack you all the way x
I’m raising my boys to be respectful. They won’t always get that right but I would be horrified if they ever did what those young lads did to you. Well done for calling them out. It takes a village......
Good for you Tasha. You are more quick witted than me, the thing you said is the thing I would have thought of ten minutes later and been annoyed with myself for not saying it at the time.
It’s really disgusting the abuse that runners get. What is so frustrating is that it’s usually by people standing motionless who wouldn’t be able to run for a minute! Runners come in all shapes, sizes and paces. I’ve never known a runner take the mickey out of another runner. Runners have respect for each other. Running can be tough. As well as uplifting. People should try it before they judge.
Good for you - I would've done the same. Would they have done this to a man? Probably not. It was meant to be intimidating and disrespectful and that is not ok. Calling them out on this was the right thing to do.
Wishing you lots of uneventful runs in the future! 🙂
I would also like to add that while I have experienced a small number of occasions when people have mocked, there have been countless occasions when people have said lovely, encouraging things, including children & teenagers. It may help that I am older than you & therefore my running is more unexpected in the eyes of the public, but it is good to see that the courteous & encouraging folk outweigh the numpties by bucketloads! 😄
Kids are generally fine when approached about their remarks or behaviour. I like to think it’s just thoughtlessness I live on the school run route so have masses of kids passing by Most of them are lovely 🙂
Absolutely right Tasha99 . I'm of the view that they wouldn't have tried the same thing with a male runner, because they'd be worried about his reaction. They probably thought that a woman was fair game and would just take it. Delighted that you didn't, though I wish it hadn't been necessary in the first place.
Lol, I think the fact that they said they we're tortured by your response while laughing means they took it in good stead...as a bit of banter back in retaliation for their cheek. I don't think you'll have harmed their fragile egos too much but they'll probably think again before taking the mickey in future 😉
Ooooo...they’d have got the wrath of my tongue if they did that to me...you did right...bet they keep their mouths shut from now on...I was bent down the other day, bum up, head down, fastening my lace that had come undone and a van went passed with some blokes jeering so I didn’t even look up but just stuck my middle finger up at them 🖕🏻...the woman who walked passed me at the time was proper laughing 😂
Last time someone shouted at me about my running I put on an adtonished face and shouted back"Oh my God! You haven't heard yet???"
and kept going...
It was fun thinking about how they probably went nuts trying to figure out what I meant...and a really nice feeling that I am now fit enough to be able to "have a conversation ehile running" LOL
Right. May have put you in possible danger, but in this instance I think you’d have been able to outrun them. I love that you invited them to join you. I hope that sticks in their minds and encourages them to get fitter at some point in the future.
I hope it stops them commenting and mimicking people 👌🏽
Brilliant response, why can't people just mind their own business? We're not bothering you so just butt out and go and eat which must be their hobby! 😆 honestly it's hard enough fighting the running gremlins at times let alone that kind of nonsense. Good on you 👍
