I'm going to read your experiences with interest! π I've been flip flapping about whether to join a club and my local one is decidedly eccentric*, but also jolly good so I'm not sure how casual I am allowed to be with my attendance! I'm currently too chicken to find out...
(*They're quite notorious round these parts, their minimal club website is essentially just directions to the Meadows where I regularly run for one of their weekly training sessions, and the pub for their other. They are into homebrew, running up hills and wear brown tshirts with no logo to compete, but quite often do very well in events!)
Well done you I keep humming and erring whether to or not the prob is the nearest one is about an hours journey away there is a local meet in next but one village but they are all very young and stick thin so as I'm an overweight old pensioner think I'll give it a miss its very brave of you π
I really enjoyed my club running. It was especially good on dark, cold, wet winter evenings when I really didn't feel like going out. It made a difference to be getting soaked and freezing with everyone else! π Honestly, it was fab. I stopped going for a couple of reasons...in the summer I didn't need to run in the evenings because I was off work (I am very much a morning runner when I can be), also I just lacked confidence. Running with others means you have to see it through to the end. I am never confident enough to think I can... even though I never ditched a run. I often ran near or at the back, but that's where I was happy and I usually kept up with the main group okay. The fastest runners just double back to find you as its an opportunity for them to increase their mileage, so it's no problem. I went with the slower running group so it was the right level. I really loved all the new routes I was introduced to... slightly upset that none of them were flat though! π
It's just finding where you fit. Once you get going, it will be good I'm sure. I'd definitely do it again. Enjoy!
Donβt be nervous. You are testing them too remember. I have to say i really love my run club, but I think it is more inclusive and out of the norm compared with some more elite clubs Iβve heard of around here. Chemistry means a lot considering how much time youβll be spending with these folks.
Tnx Decker. I know it sounds a bit silly but i think its a confidence thing. I'm now really quite excited π now I'm over the omg what have I signed up for stuff....
Rather than starting a new post thought I would update here.
Ok so nerves were kicking in on the train back from work. First Striders run at 7:00 pm! Train home got delayed due to a broken down train...great...getting close to not be able to make it!!
What I have learnt is be bloody prepared....i have my running gear on me! Train starts moving...I can run from station to Striders club so nip in loo and get my gear on...quick check of times and distance to Striders HQ...yeah I can do it......
So my warm up included a full on sprint via my flat (4 floors up) to lob my laptop and work clothes in then about a mile run to get there on time!! π€£ππ
Honestly these dramas only happen to me im sure!
Nerves gone....bit sweaty and confused...finally find the club...can I find the entrance πππ no...ask some lady who jogging along if shes knows where the entrance is and i follow her!
Awesome I'm there! Crikey there's over a 100 people on a Monday night...the lady in charge asks for quiet and first off asks if there's anyone new in. For some reason I shot my hand up and shouted "Me me" π€£π€£π€£ I got an applause and a whoop for being new. Nerves nearly alleviated.
Next the group's get announced. There were over 6 running groups. Short and slow..short medium pace..etc etc...
Wasn't sure I'm the pace in miles as I'm metric π€£ so any way I follow the slow group out. Introduce myself as new. Each group has a leader to pace and a back marker. Group leader asks what my times are and i tell her..she whisks me off saying "wrong group" π
We did 6m short run in around 55 mins at a training pace. I chatted to several people in my group and by the end of the run...totally convinced that I will enjoy this running club lark.
Running Club nerves!!! Why did i ever have them???
