Any ideas please?

Have had wet & dry amd for 15+ years. Many injections holding back the wet amd so far. Recently diagnosed with mix of osteoarthritis that I have had for most of my life mixed with rheumatoid arthritis. The Consultant wants to treat this with Hydroxchlororoquine asap. Only problem with this drug is that it has some nasty side effects & can cause sight problems. Especially for those of us with macular & retinal problems. I really want the pain I have to lessen but not at the risk of losing my sight. At 77 & living alone with no one close to help I am worried now! Anyone have any ideas about this or taken this drug with macular or retinal problems please? Thanks for any help!

I don’t use this medication but wonder if there is another medication you could use. I think you need to speak to your consultant and perhaps your opthamologist

Going to talk to my GP before seeing the Consultant as appointment is end of August. Want to get everything straight before I see her. So thought best place to start is asking anyone here. So thanks for answering it all helps.

I have arthritis and am currently waiting to find out if it's osteo or rheumatoid and I've been looking at the different treatment options. There are a surprising number of possible medications for rheumatoid arthritis so it is quite possible that your consultant could prescribe something else with won't risk further damage to your eyesight. This is an article I was reading which lists all the options, you might find it helpful.

Also, you probably already know about Versus Arthritis but if not you might find it a good website to try, they have so much useful information about treatments and they list possible side effects for the different types of drugs which might help you with an alternative.

Thank you for that. I have emailed Versus Arthritis & waiting for a reply. Hoping there is something else without the nasty side effects. Good to know I am not alone anyway. Hope you get a good result with yours.

Hi cormorin. I was diagnosed with wet amd in 2018 and RA in 2019. When talking with the rheumatologist about what medication I would be given and my eye problem, it was decided that I shouldn't have HCQ for that reason. Good luck and I hope you get the right medication for you. x

Hi thanks for that. Good to know someone else has similar problem. Working out what to tell my Consultant hoping she is one who will listen. Will post again when I find out. Meanwhile thanks to all of you helping.

My husband took hydroxychloroquine for his RA for about 25 years with good success—until he developed retinal toxicity from it. He now takes sulfasalazine, along with methotrexate and prednisone for his RA. He has wet AMD in both eyes.

Hi thanks for that. I am trying to get as many other treatments noted to discuss with the Consultant when I see her at end of August. So good to know someone else has good experience with another medication!

I'm sorry that I don't have anything to add. I have wet and dry myself. I just want to say that I admire anyone who is 77 and living alone. My Mom lived alone for many years with MD, and met and overcame many many everyday obstacles, many of which we never knew about. I'll bet if we knew you we could say the same about you. But Someone knows. I know that it is challenging for you, every single day, in lots of different ways, big and small. You have my admiration, and I am sure I am joined by many many more, for your bravery and courage. Good luck. Press on!

Thank you for your very kind words. Hopefully when I see the Consultant in a couple of months I will be able to let everyone kind enough to try to help know the result. With a bit of luck I will be able to get back to how I was before this started. Again thank you for your words, good to know your Mom was a fighter.
