OCT scans

How often is it necessary to have an OCT scan to monitor the wet AMD.

Just wondering if anyone has had this done at their opticians?

Kind regards

Ann

I don't have wetmd but had an OCT at every check up at my eye clinic to check oedema level and decide if more Iinj needed. The frequency of check up being determined by the injection schedule ( which of course is itself determined by how well the inj are working and the aim to extend the period between them).

If one is attending an eye clinic I can't see the point of having one done at an optician as the clinic would want to do their own anyway and if it's felt one's sight is worsening then going direct to one's clinic is preferable to delaying things by going via an optician?

Presumably there is also a cost at the optician?

Not sure £15,000 for a second-hand one should be too much for a local optician or even £50,000 for a new one in optician chains. £150,000 for one that can do about as well as a fluorescein angiogram is nothing I'd dissuade them from!

Hi ironbrain, I meant a cost to the patient to have it done at an optician ( eye tests generally aren't free are they?)

I see a retinal specialist and my insurance covers my OCT scans and injections. I have a scan every time to check the swelling and to see if I need a shot.

I have wet amd in one eye and dry in the other both of which appear to be stable at present. I have an OCT scan every month (private) in the hope that any problem can be identified and addresses at the earliest possible time.

Hi eyesight, yes you are right of course, just disappointed I have to pay £280 for it on top of the private injection, thought I would check it out to see if it differs, my consultant has another machine too that can see what’s going on behind the eye too?

Hope you are doing ok.

Best regards

Ann

I find that the optician will take a retinal photograph which can detect AND but is only good enough to indicate that a 3D scan is necessary rather than as a monitoring tool

Yes, I’ve had retinal photos at an opticians, but OCT only at a clinic. I’m not sure there’s much point in having an OCT unless the ophthalmologist will review it and use it to direct treatment.

Might not an OCT detect a swelling or a likelihood of a swelling caused by CNV before a fundus photograph? I don't know – that's my supposition.

I’m not sure will be doing more investigation

I think the optician I spoke to has the same OCT machine as the hospital and can print off. Thanks Steven will let you know.

I have been for my 5 weekly check-up today. I have a scan at every visit but, I didn't know what kind of scan it was. I remembered seeing this post about OCT so asked the technician and she confirmed that it was OCT. Still learning something new every day!! I did have an injection today but, the last one was in June so that was a good break. The last time I went that long was when I had a massive bleed and lost central vision. I was somewhat relieved when I was told there was just a small change in my "good" eye and I would get an injection. I don't remember when I last had one in the eye with loss of central vision. I haven't been told that they have given up on that one.

Wishing you all well. xxx

Thanks Bobbie915

Sounds like you have been through it, sorry you had such an awful bleed, hopefully the other eye is being treated well and you keep good vision.

I am going privately at the moment really because of where I live but found out that I have to pay for the OCT on top which is another £280 so I am thinking of going to a qualified optician who can offer me on for £30.

So will go midweek to see if I get the same results prior to my next injection.

So all the best to you. Keep eating the spinach etc

Kind regards

Ann
