what are alternatives to betadine prior to macular injections
betadine issues?: what are alternatives to... - Macular Society
betadine issues?
I am allergic to iodine and so they use something else but I don't know the name of the product, sorry but it does not seem to cause any problems after the injections. Take care x
I also had a bad reaction to the iodine. What my doctor did was put in the iodine to disinfect my eye, then flush it out right after with saline, and lots of it. That was the only way I could tolerate it. Maybe there is something else instead that can be better gor you. But wanted to share what the doctor did for me. Hope that helps.
Aqueous Chlorhexidine is an alternative if you cannot tolerate the iodine based preparation. It is said to be gentler. I have been given the drops on one occasion before injection, but cannot say I felt any difference.
All the best x
Chlorhexidine is an antibiotic used in my case following the injection.
I am not aware of an alternative although I suppose there must be one.
One option would be to ask for a diluted solution of Betadine which I know some patients with the reaction problem receive.
Aqueous Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic rather than an antibiotic and can be used before injections, which I was offered and given on one occasion after a bad reacton, but it seems they prefer to use betadine which has been used for me on all other occasions.
Whoops! My mistake , I was thinking chloramphenicol.
A good job I am not a medic!! 😱
Hello 2see,
The only alternative to betadine that we are aware of, as the other posters have explained, is 'chlorhexadine'.
