Blood eye

I have just had my fourth injection and my eye is covered in blood. My previous three have all been clear and clean. I did have a different doctor who only clamped the eye at the bottom and held the lid open with her hand and used her other hand to inject the solution. The doctor who did all my other injections used to clamp the lid and bottom and used both hands to do the injections. Why, though, should this make any difference to the result and can anyone suggest a way to "clean up" my eye, please? The injection was two days ago.

I am surprised she did not clamp both lids. It helps to keep the eye still when it matters. With everything else going on the last thing you want is someone to fiddle with your eye lid. But it does happen occasionally , even with both lids clamped, that they hit a blood vessel. You ought to have it checked though to make sure it is not still bleeding. If it has stopped the blood will be absorbed within the eye, but it may well take a week or so.

All the best

That doesn't sound like a very professional injection!! Hopefully the blood

Will soon go. With my last injection my eye was sore and bloody for nearly three weeks, so it's not just you, it does happen unfortunately.

Hope your next injection goes better.xx

Strange, I thought the clamp had a guide in it for the inj. Anyway, they can hit a blood vessel anytime I'm afraid so it's just the luck of the draw. I've had a few demon eyes myself (won't put pic here but check out one of my old posts lol). It can take weeks to clear. Just check it isn't getting worse, but unlikely to.

Good luck going forward .

Hi, the 'clamp' needs to be under both lids to work, it is a spring like mechanism. So placing it under one lid would defeat its purpose. The clamp is used to retract the lids to expose more white of the eye.

The caliper is used to measure distance from the coloured part (limbus) and some injectors will rest their hand on the patient brow, which can feel strange especially with a drape between. I wonder if this is what occurred.

Don't worry about the bruise, I think its more surprising that every injection doesn't cause one!

I had one minor bleed in 76 injections. Yours should reabsorb and clear in around a week. It is something of an occupational hazard, the remarkable thing is that it does not happen more frequently.

As everyone said, it can happen, i've had 3 in 3yrs, looks awful but cleared up in couple of days .....i'd be more worried about injector not clamping upper and lower lids ..worth mentioning next time xxx

that's normal, sometimes you get the blood sometimes not.

Thank you all for your replies. It's most reassuring. Sorry to see, though, that it's not all that uncommon. I think I will have a word about the clamping next time, though; especially if it's the same opthalmologist.

Thanks again

I have just found this site, been reviewing and posting the prostate cancer site. I also have Macular degeneration and have had four shots this year. My doctor does not use any clamps, should I be concerned? Have not had any issues so far.

Hi Joe, the Royal College of Opthalmologists have intravitreal inj guidelines ( being updated last I checked but you can call them and they kindly answered my questions). You can find them on the web. My clinic varies slightly from them but nothing significant - I consider the clamp significant.

Worth mentioning that the clamp they used for the injs I had is different to the one they've used for my steroid eye implant. ( The only time they didn't use the clamp was for the first implant anaesthetic inj as it was going in where the clamp got in the way but then the clamp was used).

I think I've read others describe clamps a bit different too so there seems to be some variation but it's always used.
