Very soon having an eye injection for wet eye I came out in a terrible almost bruised looking dermatitis around that eye, it then spread over my face . I still get this dermatitis on my fingers and face . I was told it wasn't the injection , but it was a big coincidence that this happened after this injection and I never suffered before. Can any one help with this. please.?

Hi Candymam

So sorry to hear of your problem. It is quite possible that you are allergic to iodine or even the antibiotic drops if you are are given them to use for 3 days after the injection, or indeed, to any of the chemicals used during the process. Try cleaning the the area around your eye after the injection and after instilling the drops with soft soap and lukewarm water (baby soap is as good as anything), but make sure nothing gets into your eye. You can use can a squeezed out cotton woll bud. If that does not work see your GP. He/she will be able to prescribe appropriate medication. It should certainly not be dismissed as unrelated to the injections unless proper tests, to establish the cause, have been carried out, especially since you never had this problem in the past. Sometimes a reaction may start off as hardly noticable, but increases in intensity each time you are exposed to the cause again.

Hope all goes well for you.

Dear Candymam,

I am glad to read that they are now investigating the cause for you.

Could I just clarify, you stated that you only received one injection for wet AMD and were offered no more? Please contact us on the Macular Society helpline to discuss this further.

I am copying links for our booklets on Treatments and our Essential guide to wet AMD:

The Macular Society helpline is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday on 0300 3030 111.

That is correct , because the dermatitis began after just a few after the injection , and when I returned 1 month for the next injection and they saw how badly the dermatitis was they wouldn't give me another and to see my GP. I subsequently returned to the macular clinic a couple more times still refused and then discharged with no explanation only the dermatitis was nothing to do with the injection and see a dermatologist. Even my GPS agreed with them. Is this a huge coincidence or what , I receive injection and iodine wash etc and this allergy appears never had anything like it before.

Dear Candymam,

It would be worth establishing on what basis you were discharged. You could still try contacting the ophthalmologist's secretary to try and establish this.
