Stage 4 diagnosis....feeling better than ever.....?
So my dad got a stage 4 diagnosis out of the blue 2 weeks ago. He is elderly and am sure he has not understood the diagnosis (given less than 3 months). He is not being treated as he is frail and 92 but is suddenly very chirpy, positive, keen to do stuff, though as confused as hell. Anyone else got experience of this? Anyone know what we can all expect?
confusing as it may sound - the positivity is to be welcomed. the confusion could be as a result of brain mets - have they scanned his brain? alternatively could be dehydration, urine infection or a number of other causes. However this may also be his response to facing his mortality and at 92, appreciating the good life he has had and the things he still wishes to do.
My dad had bowel cancer in his late 50s (twice), has gone onto have a TIA, stent in his heart, and another major bowel cancer 2 years ago - he is now 88, frail yet mum's carer. Each time he is ill, he goes on a campaign of activity (gardening, clearing out stuff, DIY etc) as if this is his response that he might not be around for a while. Perhaps it's the same with yours? Just a thought.... Pregnant women often get a surge of energy before they give birth and have cleaning frenzies so our bodies/brains are capable of what seem strange behaviours at such times. good luck with what he wants to do and make the most of the time he has left.
Welcome to the forum where you will find support and encouragement. JanetteR57 has provided an excellent reply, and it is great he is feeling well, positive and wanting to be active.
Discuss future care with his GP or cancer specialist nurse/ macmillan nurse, to enable you to be aware what next to expect. However it is quite amazing how we do react to things and for the moment that puts your Dad in a better place emotionally and mentally.
If you wish to discuss anything you can call us on our free nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200.
