Oncologist mistake.

My husband went for check up 8 weeks ago , saw different oncologist to whom we usually see,he said x-ray looks ok, told my husband to to come back in 8 weeks. The oncologist should of notice on x-ray that the cancer was growing again, in 6 week the cancer has spread to chest, lung, 2 lymph nodes in tummy and liver, my lovely husband has been really poorly and in pain. He should of notice the cancer had started to grow again in lung, with treatment my husband has 6 months, My husbands tumour has been asleep for a year after chemo/radiotherapy and he was doing so well .This is the same oncologist who laughed at my husband when my husband told him he had fluid in feet, tummy and couldn't breath. He didn't suggest any treatment. We have no faith in that oncologist, we are so shock by the news today. My husband was first told he had sclc in November 2015. Has this happen to anyone else...

This has not happened to my family but I am so sorry and disgusted to hear it has happened to yours. You have been treated appallingly. If I was in that situation I would be putting a formal complaint in to the PALS team at the hospital regarding the oncologists behaviour. How dare he laugh in the face of a cancer patient. How many other poor people has he done this too. He should definitely NOT be working with people who are going through the worst time of their lives.

God bless

I would ask to be moved to a different oncologist and also make a complaint to the hospital via the PALS system.

I went to a Lung Cancer Clinic in January 2013 at my local hospital and was told by the Consultant that I didn't have lung cancer and that I was an inappropriate referral, one of many that he was getting. November 2013 and I started to loose my eye sight in my right eye. A secondary tumour is found and a biopsy from my eye shows that the primary is in my lung!! So I have been in a similar situation.

Initially I didn't have the energy to complain and just wanted to get as well as I could. I then wrote a letter of complaint to the Chief Executive and had a response. The response was ambiguous and contradictory.

Months later when I felt well enough a meeting was arranged for me to meet with three of the Consultants who had been involved in the decision. Two were Consultant Radiologists who had commented on the CT scan and X-ray. I went through my story with them and the impact on my life. I found the whole process emotionally exhausting but felt that I had to do it to try to prevent similar situations in the future.

I continue to tell people my story as I don't want other people to go through what I have done. I have not been a patient in that clinic since then and am now treated at another hospital where I am very happy with the care that I receive.

Hope this helps. Thinking of you at this difficult time Xx

Dear betty444

So sorry to hear of the experience that your Husband has had with the Oncologist and disappointing to hear. It is so important to be listened to and sad that this has not happened for you both during such a difficult time.

The forum is a great place to find support and encouragement from those who have experienced it first hand.

Do you have the support of district/macmillan nurses, where they will ensure your Husband is comfortable and pain free.

Some Hospitals have Maggies centres attached who can provide advice in a variety of areas e.g support services, financial /home and personal support.

You could either discuss with the Oncologist that you normally see or request a second opinion via your GP

If you wish to discuss anything you can call our free nurse led helpline on 0800 358 7200

Kind regards
