Is Egfr in the same group as Alk? The oncologist said they tested for egfr, does that mean they would have tested for alk too?

EGFR mutations??
Hello em 16780,
It would suggest that you had been but you would need to check with your Oncologist.
Kind regards
Hello Em
EGFR and ALK are different genetic mutations that can be found in people with lung cancer. We have a booklet that explains these terms and what they mean in terms of treatment.
Currently the way tests are done varies across the country. We know that if someone is EGFR+ they are unlikely to be ALK+, so sometimes one test is done and once the results are known the other will follow if it is necessary. It is positive that your oncologist is looking at these factors as it may influence what the best treatment option for you might be. Many people will not have these mutations, so it may be that your results come back negative. The oncologist will then look at how best to treat your lung cancer.
If you have any questions or you would like a copy of our targeted therapy booklet please give us a call on our free helpline 0333 323 7200 option 2, or email us on lungcancerhelp@roycastle.org.
best wishes
